@Snowy yeah was independent (Mackies Store), then Value Rite, then True Value, then something else I think and then Hammer. Was a bit of a bazaar as was a newsagents and sold some toys as well as being a dry cleaning agents in the independent years.
I'm the most disappointing son of a hardware store owner though.
And just to be on topic for once, I'm sure I'm a shitload happier than my parents were at the same age. No kids though.

@Snowy probably to at least know what end of a hammer to use.
I was more interested in sitting on the paint shaker.
To be fair, that does sound fun
Kinda like this but bigger and looked more old school, had a perspex top so you could see the oil sloshing around inside. Reckon the old man must still have it sitting in a garage, interested @Snowy?

Ok I've only got as far as people saying 3 mill isn't enough to stop working and m4l saying 2 mill would hardly change his life and fucken hell I'm flabbergasted.
What the fuck do you guys earn and spend on that you couldn't live off 50k a year for the next 60 years?
I could easily turn 1 mill pounds into pretty much retirement with the odd spot of work on property or what have you here and there.
I wouldn't need much because I can sell the house for profit, my superannuation is in good position as well as having a defined benefits scheme and we already have our retirement block (300+ acres with existing house) although the house will need some work/ renovations but that will keep me occupied. I already have toys and the more cash you have available the more expensive the toys and the return isn't linear so not too bothered with having the latest, fastest and greatest. Then all I need is travelling money. And a lot of it because SWMBO doesn't do economy on long stretches.

i think there has been a couple of threads that have touched on similar topics and im not really sure the best one so i'll stick this in here and move if needs be
so, i decided during lockdown last year i was going to get back into playing rugby, wife was working long hours and quite honestly i just got a bit lonely at night
found a club not too far away here in melbourne and preseason started training started late Jan.
jeez, a real wake up call, apparently jogging just doesn;t cut it on the fitness scales, having a proper conditioning coach is helping and can at least finish a session without having to take a break to "stretch"
some real trouble with knees/achilles/calf's as have had issues with them in the past. slowly coming right though through proper training
can i also just add the back of the lineout seem a lot further away that i remember from the last time i played!
preseason games started this week, if anyone wants to feel a but queasy i can provide photos of my back from the first game, black/blue and red
in general i feel good though, great to meet loads of new blokes ranging from the 20 years olds trying to go pro to some older hats waiting for the squads to sperate so the 3rds can spend at least one training run at the pub
and interesting development is the wife, started making comments about missing me being out 2-3 nights a weeks and Saturday games still on the horizon
will settle down i think as i have no expectations above the 3rds and so should get a night back a week
just interesting how things change a bit
-
@kiwiwomble going back to play is a huge move. A little jealous to be honest.
I hope you have a fun season.
-
@mariner4life have to say, had to do a lot on my own, down the local school on the off mornings to practice throwing against a back board, googling videos of AB hookers going through throwing
it will be a test if it just take too much time out of the week, dont want to go too far the other way and piss the wife off
just some mates a bit closer to home that want to watch some rugby every so often was the real catalyst
did get to buys some new boots thought whish was cool
-
@kiwiwomble i bought new ones for touch. enjoyed the process.

@kiwiwomble I bought new ones when I played Golden Oldies, cos I needed boots!
I miss it, and do often think about having another crack at it, but not sure the body would hold up to the rigors of it week in week out, havent had to deal with the contacts like that for too many years now.
But good on ya bro!!
-
@taniwharugby i had my touch/football boots but first scrum we put down just showed they had nowhere near the grip needed
yeah, the contact is full on and has taken some work getting use to sticking your head in dangerous places
-
@Kiwiwomble yeah it's amazing trying to get back into the drills you didn't bat an eyelid at and now absolutely dread! I lost interest when it became apparent we wouldn't be playing but will get back when there's actual rugby on the horizon...
Been asked to help out coaching the 2nds too so might as well take advantage of club funds to do some courses.
-
Awesome!! Im a long time retired and I can only imagine how the first few weeks of contact will feel!
Fuck I miss it!! I love the gym and weights but being able to unleash on the paddock is something else.
And when a forward pack really starts humming its a magic thing to be a part of. -
