I remember thinking in 2011 WC if DC had been fully fit we would have walked it. He was that good.
Thinking along that line it makes the 2011 win even more impressive because we did it with 3rd and 4th choice 10s

Interesting about his thought processes around retirement and coaching
-
Which undisputedly proves that Dan was the best ten ever.
As for Jonny being better defensively, he probably put in more hard hits, but Dan's low technique was text book stuff especially to bring down larger players. So I'd go with Dan there too Clive, just because you coached your boy didn't make him better.

Some highlight reel this:
Watched 4 mins and saw one piece of brilliance
Needs a massive edit and refocus
He was no Gavin Henson but he went alright sometimes. Give DC a break
Don’t be so precious mate, he wasn’t knocking DC just the puff piece masquerading as a highlights reel and the thing is if there was ever a player that didn’t need a puff piece it would be Carter.
I’m disappointed you thought I was being remotely serious. Good White knighting though.
Always difficult to know with you half-Jock/half-colonial types.
I don’t take Rugby seriously enough these days to get that triggered.
-
@snowy Jonny’s hard hits broke his body way too young. If Woodentop coached him that he ruined him.
I don’t remember anybody the 10 channel being particularly leaky when DC was playing. Best I’ve ever seen, a privilege to have seen him at his best.

Agreed. Dan was a great defender. I have no idea whether Clive coached that technique with Jonny (I suspect it was earlier). I was getting at Clive playing favourites because he coached him rather than being objective like us AB fans...
Dan was still way better though.

Whoa, way to tarnish the legacy of Stephen Donald, sheeeesh !

Except the third choice turned out to be far, far better than the second choice -- we just did not know that at the time. When Cruden was 1st Five for the the ABs was our best ever period.
Cruden ran onto the 2011 final with no demons (as did Beaver) and could just play his game. Carter was carrying two horrible previous RWC losses in his head. Given that the rest of the team near choked for the same reason, I don't think Carter would have made much difference.
If having Carter would have walked it, why did having McCaw make it so difficult?

What an absurd assertion, to claim Wilkinson is better because he was a better defender (which is debatable anyway, was he a better defensive communicator, a better scrambling defender yada yada). Defending at 10 is important, but the requirement is to be solid, not a destroyer. Far more important is your ability to coordinate the team, to put them in the right areas, to keep defenders honest.
There is a reason why we still see some great 10's at the highest level despite being very average defenders (hi Merhts)
Carter was the best, bar none.
Also that link is broken, here it is again:
-
when you think PIri had time at 10 too, you should say we had 5 10s in 2011.
JW was always a hard hitter on defence, he and HOniball were 2 agressive defenders (legal, not like Butch) however DC was more efficient with is use of his tackles. Was a very good defender but did so by simply making the tackle without putting in the big hits, thus being kinder to his body.
BUt its when you add in the other aspects to DC's game where he sits head and shoulders above anyone else, running, kicking, passing.
When he went down in 2011, I though, faaaark we are done, nope
Then there were some people questioning his selection in 2015, nope, he was awesome, that DG he got v Aus in 2015 was sublime, such a clutch play that you get from the greats.

McCaw had a broken bone in his foot in the 2011 RWC.
As for Carter, the best 10 i've ever seen. He had it all.
That 2015 RWC quarter, semi and final performance from him something else. He finally laid to rest the issue of never having won a World Cup (by being on the field). The drop goal in the final gets more publicity but the drop goal in the rain in the semi was just as impressive - up to that point the ABs were looking a bit shaky and he grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.
-
@kiwimurph wasn't that one in the semi off his right as well?
-
@delicatessen left foot. The final conversion out in front in the final he kicked with his right.

Yep, but look who said it...As I said, it proves that Carter was the best if Clive disagrees.

There's a moment in the 2015 final when Nehe puts a pretty flaccid clearing kick into touch just outside the 22. Bender might be in the bin at this time and the Aussie resurgence is coming.
Dan basically starts talking more than ever, revving the boys up and, on replays if you just focus on him, he takes the game as his to win and simply gets it done, including the drop goal from a static base which was immense. There was no way he was going to let this one get away.
Jesus, he was good😁

With hardly any replays or footage of it! 🙂

Fuckin' legend. I remember sitting at Twickenham watching that, plastic glasses of champagne in hand. Jeez, the Bollinger tent made some money off me that night.

Johnny was defensively great all for a couple of sessions, then his shoulders were fucked and he was never that good any more
