Is it time to think about giving Kyle the new ball and dropping Boult or Southee to three?
Think about it, coz hes that impressive, but it's a no from me. I think the sum of all parts is better with threats from 3rd and 4th seamers (Jamieson and Wagner), as well as openers.
Matt Henry is proof that slotting in random opening swing bowlers as 3rd or 4th seamer doesnt work.
It's just crazy that Kyle has such a good record already and hasn't bowled with the new ball yet once.
Aussies don't mind bowling the best in the world at first drop so I too think we leave it as it is. Horrible feeling as a batsman seeing off the openers only to look up and have more of a threat marking his run up 🙂

Not sure if anyone watched the lunch break, but they had a question and answer thingy with Fleming and McMillan. Someone asked Fleming what is the one thing he would have liked to have known prior to playing test cricket. His answer was he wished he had learnt how to convert 50s into 100s.
Both he and McMillan pointed out that they were able to progress through the ranks without being taught to score 100s. 70s and 80s were enough. It's good to see there is an awareness of this in NZ cricket now. I grew up playing with and against these guys and it always bothered me that they were never held to account when when they got out at bad times. I witnessed a number of those middling scores from both of them, and others, and nobody got up them for it. Compare that to rugby where the young hotshots were brought back down to earth if they did something stupid on the field.
Score 30 more runs. Next question.

No one didn't convert 50s into 100s quite like Fleming.
In saying that he was still in the convo for our best ever team til KW and Rossco emerged.

NZ cricket highlights. Been marvelling out how poorly put together these videos have been.
Nothing of our Kane reaching 200. Got Mitchell's 50 though, but not his hundred 🙄
Yeah, I just watched that. WTF was the complier thinking?? Williamson double ton and Mitchell ton / declaration are obvious highlights!
Not heard Sumo in a while, and honestly, it wasn't long enough. He's not the voice of cricket. On Kane's wicket ...
"Daryl Mitchell! .... looks on as Kane ....."

I've only seen little of this and the last test but have had to switch it on mute each time he steps into the comms box. Cricket is one of those sports where you just can't have "generalist" commentators. It's too long and there's too much speaking time for them to demonstrate just how little they know about the game.

I only had half an eye on the telebision at that stage and saw the wicket but thought it was Mitchell because of that.
Thought, gosh hes getting a great ovation for 70 odd ... hang on ...

At one point Kane hit a square drive and he said "Kane cutting..."
I like Sumo but agree you need a level of expertise to he able to commentate a test.

@No-Quarter I'm not as much of a fan as I used to be but I definitely know I prefer him in smaller doses now. He doesn't seem comfortable with those quieter patches of commentary and tries to force fill it with banter. Twice heard him drop a random 'intellectual' word into his comms and the other person has gone ummmmm. Just makes him come across as a bit of a piston wristed gibbon tbh.
ha ha I am also still very salty about Radiosport dying so Sumo is probably coping some of that.

Pretty harsh. Nisbo has made a very successful career doing just this.

I don't find him too bad, I'm more interested in watching the pictures

Has anyone been listening to the Magic Talk commentary with Doull, Hesson etc?
Yep, Doull can be funny but serious when he needs to be and nicely self effacing about his career ( which was actually pretty decent all up )
-
Thinking it's going to be a pretty tough grind on a fairly lifeless pitch today. Kyle is going to be key with his extra height/bounce.

I think I would have either watched or listened to 80% of the summer"s cricket. I think commentary has been fine, and if anything is getting better as the season goes on.
It must be fucken tough being a radio commentator. When you consider the time between each ball that is a shitload of dead air that needs filling. On the whole I reckon they do it very well and obviously having ex players helps massively too. Some of them have some good yarns and anecdotes.
