@Machpants i think top oz v nz team makes the most sense, so its not a potential repeat.

They're all potential repeats, we are playing each other once. The wording says to me the correct way, top two teams. But I'll wait if they start down the slippery slope of watering down competition that fucked the original super rugby happens even before a full trans Ta$man League is set in 2022

There's an argument to be made the 'correct' way for this 6 week comp is to have the top nz team vs the top aus team - cos then at least the best aussie team would have done better than the other 4 aussie teams vs a common opponent (nz teams) and vice versa for the best kiwi team having done better than the other 4 kiwi teams vs a common opponent (aus teams).

I'm not sure how you could justify the 2nd nz team making the final over the top aussie team (for example) when the 2nd kiwi team played 5 aussie sides and the top aussie team played 5 kiwi sides.

@Machpants I meant not a potential repeat of the SRA or SRao finals.

Again, it's not an ideal model but makes the most sense for next year in isolation.

That's why I made the comment about there being 2 different finals. It is possible that the final of the trans- Ta$man competition will feature different teams/winners to the SRA and SRAu finals. Welcome to 2020!

Where is the ‘super round (🤢 ) held? Who get’s that possible cash bonanza?

What is the deal for the finalist, ie top 2 or top each country.

    From ABs website answers
Basically TBC and top two teams on points

NZR and RA will announce kick-off times, dates and venues for Sky Super Rugby Trans- Ta$man as well as the process that will be used to select the location of the ‘Super Round’ in due course.

The Final will be played between the top two teams after the five weeks of matches on the combined competition ladder with the team who finished first earning home advantage for the decider.

    @Machpants

Good, so we can get a final between two teams from the same country. Otherwise we could conceivably get a team with a perfect record not making the final over a team with a losing record.

Would think there would be some revenue sharing agreement for that. It has to be one of Sydney, Auckland or Brisbane you'd think.

@barbarian Brisbane would be great. Stadium and location is perfect.

The NRL one was fucking great.

@mariner4life It also reads to me as a play to get Governments to pony up some $$$ to host it. Tourism magnet etc. QLD Government paid handsomely for the NRL Magic round.

given the number of fans from all over that came, i would say it was money well spent

I like this new set up. 3 winners not just one. And it starts with a 2 rounds one country competition. If it a success they may stick with this format (maybe add one team to both countries).

    I don't like the 12 team proposal

A guaranteed Australian/NZ final and a meritocracy for the combined final - ticks a few boxes.

There is a good chance the combined final will be a repeat of the NZ final i think.

I wonder if serious thought was given so that all teams play their away games consecutively to avoid multiple trans- Ta$man flights. A quick look shows that only the Brumbies and Force are doing that. I am sure the draw could have been adjusted to do that.

In case anyone gives a shit this is what the table would have looked like going into the trans Ta$man comp. Crusaders Blues both got 2 points for their cancelled game.

Apparently there won't be a combined table. All teams will start on 0 for the TT component, meaning the Aussie sides are fucked.

This was in the article "The Final will be played between the top two placed teams on the combined competition table with the team who finished first to host the decider."
