Ha, that did make me chortle quite heartily. Right, now you've made your contribution you can leave cos we all know cricket isn't your forte.

I mentioned Hick and Ramprakash to make a point that first class averages don't mean a huge amount, Crowe shits all over their best test efforts.

Hear me out Virg,

MC didn't accuse opposition of trying to kill him but there are parallels.

Both were THE key players in their teams for most of their careers.

BOD stood out in that Irish backline like dogs balls for most of his career, ditto Crowe for the BC in the batting line up.

"Watch out for BOD/Crowe, they're really dangerous....."

However was BOD heaps better ( or even better full stop ) than Umaga/Smith/Mortlock/Fourie/Greenwood etc ?

Point I'm making is that it's easier to stand out amongst lesser players. Richie Richardson woulda been the best player in most batting line ups of his era, only thing is at either end he had Viv Richards then Brian Lara who outshone him plus guys like Greenidge and Haynes who were at least as good as he was.

Despite being a prize cock, I would describe BOD as being a great of the game rather than just a "very good player". He also carved up as a Lion in 2001, so he didn't just stand out among the Leprechauns.

God knows how good Crowe could have been in that WI line-up.

OK, THAT is a very good point, same could be said for Hadlee if he got to open with Marshall. It is really hard work to separate BOD the man from BOD the player to be fair.

Cos his overall record is really close to Crowes ? they also tend not to knight players unless they could play a bit. Sorry the fact he's black is incidental, don't bring race into this.

I thought Spofforth was a quick?

A quick google confirms he was initially and known as "The Demon". But mixed it up and got a lot with his "break back" as a slow bowler. Fascinating. Learn something every day.

To be fair Richie Richardson was outstandingly good, he was just overshadowed by Viv & Lara. And his hat. And trying to hold a disintegrating team together. Its not disimilar to the way people often miss that Laxman was a genius with the bat because he wasn't Sewag, Sahin or Dravid.

I'm not sold Richie was an all time great, but he'd average mid 50's now (as would Crowe). There is an element of "in another team...". Like if Jason Gillespie had been a Kiwi, then you have a guy with 400 wickets & a double ton.

and if Paddles had been in the Windies team he's have had 250 wickets tops. If they persevered with him in his early wild days.

Nail. Head. That's precisely what I've been trying to point out for far too many pages. I also don't think Richardson is an all time great but very comparable to Crowe, both were genuinely fucken good. Crowe just stood out more cos his career wasn't bookended by genuine legends ( which none of you can deny ) in Richards and Lara.

Laxman is a great example. If he passed away tomorrow I'm sure the tributes would flow aplenty for a brilliant record but again, look closer and he was often "only" the third or fourth best in the team at any given time.
