RIP Martin Crowe
-
Think we have all said a few times averaging 50+ today is like 45+ in the 70s and 80s
Which is why the stat of Crowe averaging higher than anyone else from 85 to 91 is relevant.
A favourite stat of mine that MN5 loathes is that if you ignore Crowes early 7 tests ( when he was clearly not ready to face Lillie and Thompson) and his last 4 or 5 tests web he was literally hobbling on 1 leg, his average is over 50.
Yes you can pick apart any player and make their stats look better. But Crowes circumstances are very much different, especially when you factor his compelling and utter World Class FC record. 15th best of all fucken time. -

I've known Crowe is/was a great since I was 13 years old (1985) -

I remember the first five or six times you brought that one up. If you ignore all his other tests apart from when he scored 299 at home against a weak Sri Lankan attack his average is really high.
-

pffffft, you "like" it when I talk about police shit on the other thread. Don't hate on me cos of my opinion of Martin "the crowd'll tell ya" Crowe ( which is a high opinion all things considered ).

I've NEVER said Gayle is a God much less anything other than a very decent test batsman.
-

Referencing Ramprakash and Hick anywhere near Crowe was thine sacrilege, heathen.
-

He was waaaay better than Hadlee, at batting!

Ha, that did make me chortle quite heartily. Right, now you've made your contribution you can leave cos we all know cricket isn't your forte.

I mentioned Hick and Ramprakash to make a point that first class averages don't mean a huge amount, Crowe shits all over their best test efforts.
-

fark clearly I know more than you think, I have heard of Crowe, but not half those other nobody's you keep Willising on about! :)

-

Hear me out Virg,

MC didn't accuse opposition of trying to kill him but there are parallels.

Both were THE key players in their teams for most of their careers.

BOD stood out in that Irish backline like dogs balls for most of his career, ditto Crowe for the BC in the batting line up.

"Watch out for BOD/Crowe, they're really dangerous....."

However was BOD heaps better ( or even better full stop ) than Umaga/Smith/Mortlock/Fourie/Greenwood etc ?

Point I'm making is that it's easier to stand out amongst lesser players. Richie Richardson woulda been the best player in most batting line ups of his era, only thing is at either end he had Viv Richards then Brian Lara who outshone him plus guys like Greenidge and Haynes who were at least as good as he was.
-

Despite being a prize cock, I would describe BOD as being a great of the game rather than just a "very good player". He also carved up as a Lion in 2001, so he didn't just stand out among the Leprechauns.

God knows how good Crowe could have been in that WI line-up.
-

OK, THAT is a very good point, same could be said for Hadlee if he got to open with Marshall. It is really hard work to separate BOD the man from BOD the player to be fair.
