6 games over 6 weeks...
in a RWC year we play each other once dont we?
Why couldnt they do that in a Covid year?
Or, if they wanted more $$$, play each other once, top 2 play the 'final' bottom 2 play 3rd/4th...4 games over 4 weeks.
in a RWC year we play each other once and WR compensates each Tier 1 nation by 15m each to sacrafice their schedules to fit the tournament in.
The emergency 15m that the ARU got form WR earlier this year, that was their 2023 payment brought forward.
Why not just come home on the 27th of December, what's the big deal.
Players aren't robots and are allowed to spend time with their family over xmas? Particularly those with new children.
Same as any other job.

Games wise I am sure that NZR is also keeping in mind the world rankings. We have an opportunity at this tournament to claim the #1 position back and that means a lot to NZR in the saleability of the brand to sponsors.
It will be a claytons ranking this year, SA have had hardly any rugby.

Yes, they don't have to play. I bear no grudge.
Or, if their employer allows, they can play half or 3/4s. and bail early.I doubt being home on the 25th or 27th makes much different if they have only really young kids (under 18 months). They don't know what day it is. It's the 10 weeks away that would hurt.
The South Africans and Argentinians are in the same boat. Why Is Robinson writing public letters instead of shoring up some voting numbers with Saffas and Argies? He has alienated all his former friends? Well, then let's get on and deal with it. Pick a squad that can meet the conditions, no grudges at those who mot out. And do it quick so those not going can get back to NPC and earn their salaries and boost some crowds.

I recall reading somewhere a mention of offering rankings being unaffected due to Covid-19 for this year?

Interestingly - from a player welfare point of view - Wales played 7 tests in 5.5 weeks at RWC 2019 - admittedly two of those tests were against Georgia/Uruguay but on the other hand much smaller squads for RWC (31 for RWC - 46 for TRC).
All teams who progressed to semi final stage would have had 7 tests in 6 weeks, but includes minnows ...
Most relevantly the pool of death team (England) who progressed to semi final stage would have had 7 tests (6 of them v tier 1) in 6 weeks. If not for the typhoon.

Those times of year are important for the family, not just the kids. Those partners will need support after just having kids as well.
I don't like viewing the players as dancing monkeys, just because SANZAAR can't organise a pissup in brewery, don't see why the players should suffer for it.
They have squads of 46, the player safety angle they are bleating about is covered by that. No reason to not have a compressed schedule except to stick it to NZR.

@Bovidae irrelevant to TRC as it is dependent on the international window for player release.
I'm only talking about the NZ-Aust tests, and none of the ABs or Wallabies require an international release. We could have played at least 3 of these tests before the rest of TRC started. But obviously SANZAAR want their 2 games per day format, and SA pushed for a later start as they only start playing this weekend.

I'd agree if they hadn't just had an exceptionally shortened season in an extraordinary year.
But, I agree sanzaar are hopeless here (but we are part of sanzaar , we are part of the problem).
Having it over 6 weeks instead of 5, makes sense from a financial POV only if there are crowds (and maybe for TV scheduling as they are doing double headers in same stadium - so one game per round will start at 17:30 local time). But If there are stadium-restricted attendances anyway and despite this we have not managed to convince Arg and Saf to shorten it so that both their squads can also get home for Xmas, then it tells me NZRU are inept and have lost all friends.

Must do a search. I wasnt aware of that.
IMO if no rankings then these are of that horrible 'friendly' variety -
@Rapido SA haven't committed to playing in TRC yet.
Roux said that plans for the Springboks to play the Castle Lager Rugby Championship in Australia were still being pursued but were dependent on international travel and other governmental restrictions as well as player wellness and high- performance considerations. “We’re still not in a position to confirm plans for the Springboks, but it remains our wish that they play tests this year,” said Roux. “It would not only be great to see the Rugby World Cup champions in action, but it would also give the Bok management valuable preparation for next year’s tour of the British & Irish Lions.” Competition formats and all the fixtures will be confirmed shortly.

I guess the other thing to look at, which is not so much in their control. Is the 14 days negotiable? If covid has another wave in both countries or more security guards start dicking guests (again) then protocols remain.
But if everything goes to plan, and no one breaks their bubble and no one is positive.. and in December their is no community transmission on either side of the ditch where they are, do they have to spend 14 days? I think the government might weaken their stance if this happens...anyway just a thought -
@bayimports no way the quarantine is going to change, that's wishful thinking. Could the ABs be allowed to quarantine at home? Maybe, it'll be after the election so won't be political suicide.
Really ABs should win first 3 Bleds, then at the stadium on the fifth weekend hand the cup to Oz, say we default the next game, you might as well have it, is the only way you're going to get this. Then head off back to NZ that Sunday!
