What position did you play?

@MiketheSnow Nice. the second vid reminds me a bit of those trains going through the snow in Siberia. Not sure they know quite where they're going sometimes too!
Yep, I've had to drop anchor plenty of times especially in the trees.
The snow is so light and deep you can be out of vision for a couple of turns.
And if you don't get the breathing right it's like trying to swallow a piece of coal.

Left wing mainly but I played in every other backline position at least once, apart from 1st 5, at schoolboy level.
I gave up rugby at uni and played more cricket (indoor and outdoor) at that time.
I've been playing Sunday league football for the last 18 years. Much easier on the body but playing against kids less than half your age makes it interesting. I was marking a guy that was in the Wellington Phoenix Academy a few weeks back.

Jeez. Long story.
In my first year of senior rugby I was a blindside ... But kinda sat somewhere between a 6 or 7. Was too slow for 7, and too small for 6 (6'1", 96 kg ... have managed to bulk up since then ).
So coach in my 3rd year of seniors asks me to play Hooker. Was actually quite good at it.
Apart from line out throwing.
I'm still trying to find my jumpers.
Chucked the whole playing thing at about 28.
Then took it up again when we moved to Adelaide at about 35ish.
At that stage I tended to wear 1, 2 or 3. Any of them worked.
Played prop (either side) on the Sunny Coast until finally chucked it in my mid-40s.
Rule of thumb is the older you get the smaller the number you wear.
Prior to that growing up there would not be a position I hadn't played in my teens, except maybe 13 and 15. But yes! 9 and 10.
Despite the fact that the best game I ever played was at 8 realistically I'm a 6.

At 12 -25, Lock. Tallest in the team at 178cm. I'm now 42, current height. 178cm.
Flanker at 15, although my complete lack of ability started to show through
Wing at 16. My vision had started to deteriorate by this point ... struggling to see the ball.17 years old. Required eye surgery. End of the line for me on contact sport for 3 years.
19 years old.. Required eye surgery on other eye. Another 3 years out.
22 years old. Now in London. Eye failed completely. Moorfields told me that was the end of the line for me for contact sport.Cut down in my prime. Still had 8 years to prove I was Frank Bunce the second.

Prop (preferred loosehead) and covered hooker as well.
Was 106 kg at my heaviest during my school years, now I weigh 71 kg haha since taking up running almost 10 years ago.

That’s fucking impressive!
I got to 103 kegs at uni, then settled around 94-95 until I started running at 32. After that the lowest I got was 78.5
I felt like a deer...
Until I tried to run a half with my friends who were 70 kgs.
Those (you) fluffybunnies are deer.

Halfback.

All three front row positions. Settled on Tighthead Prop as my Favourite. Mainly a B team player, peaked at 21 and played four Senior A games for my home district club. Still running around in my late thirties playing Prezzies and will continue to do so till I can have a game with my currently 12 year old son.

@gt12 You still run? Yeah running has become an addiction for me haha. I've never been seriously injured before but I'm sure my legs will crap out on me sometime.
Not as much as I’d like. Funnily enough, I started when I was having relationship troubles with an ex GF and it was a good excuse to be out of the house and away from her. Then I started losing weight, getting quicker, and loved it. I had a friend who was a real runner so running/talking was a very very good exercise for the mental health as well.
With Mrs gt12, we have a two year old kid and I’m pretty involved at the time when I prefer to run (about 5 - 7pm at night), so unless I get my ass out of bed at 5am or go out at 8:30pm, it doesn’t happen. As a result, I haven’t really got any long runs in during Spring and Summer, and I’m so unfit now that it would take me a bit to get up to it.
A good week now is (almost) daily 3-5 km runs which keeps me at about 84 kgs and somewhat sane. I fit them in lunchtimes or go out at 5:30 in the morning.
I’m a mid foot striker so I haven’t had too many knee problems (yet) but even with that, my form can get a bit dodgy so I’m sure I’ll get caught at some stage.
Are you doing plenty of miles? You’re in Christchurch right? We bought land near there and one of the things I’m really looking forward to (if we ever move there) is some not-to-serious trail running. Do you get out off tarmac?

Loving this thread getting a lovely picture of "The Fern Rugby Team", a few surprises there.
And check out big Mike swishing around the slopes! -

This rather expalins your unique 'perspective'.
Did you ever consider reffing?

What on earth do you mean by this?
Did you ever consider reffing?
Yes. I did a couple of courses a few years back. And if I'm honest, it just wasn't for me.
