My fault for looking at the headline, rolling my eyes, and posting it here. Apologies, carry on!

That is why you got nominated for best new ferner. You're a natural.

Oh but do away with the apology thing.

Paywall article (and yes it is the Daily Telegraph...) however this is the key stuff

Some of Australia’s top players are set to request early releases from their contracts after Rugby Australia made clear they would need to accept a pay cut of 40 per cent from October through to the end of the year. A call between RA and players’ union RUPA on Thursday made clear the governing body does not have a cent to spare, which means the players who had already accepted an average 60 per cent pay cut from May to September 30 will now have to swallow an additional 40 per cent cut from October 1 to December 31.

Players had been united behind the idea of boycotting the Super Rugby AU tournament, starting July 3, on Wednesday, however it seems cooler heads have prevailed and they will take the field next weekend. However, the caveat will be that some stars ask RA to release them from their contracts on September 30 so they can take up more lucrative offers overseas.

ahh how many viable overseas opportunities are available!? This could well work out ok for a small group but if players are leaving in bulk that could scupper the local comp and saturate an international market that is dying off currently.

oops poor choice of words there!

@Paekakboyz yeah lucrative compared to a -40% Ozzie SR contract, I reckon that's entry level for Premiership, France and low as for Japan!

@Machpants I'm not that up on the play about ARU pay scales, but presumably some of the lower contracted guys might be getting close to the living wage once the double % cut is applied! I get that some (many?) of these guys might have significant $$ commitments, especially if they have a big mortgage or something.

But I guess there is no expectation that ARU will reciprocate in the future if/when things improve from a cashflow perspective. I mean I didn't read the article lol

@Paekakboyz I think that the 60%, and probably the 40% will be, is on a slding scale. Those at the top take a higher percentage, the bottom much less - it averages at 60%. Then again I see that Hooper got stupid millions for a multi year contract, so maybe Oz pays it's SR players better than NZ?

Well, our small corner of rugby is doing well. Charity Day yesterday and despite getting humped in the main event, our women's sevens team really stood up on their first outing, and we're on track to raise $10K for Neuroblastoma research.

I'm rooted - ran the flag for 3 mens grades (30, 35, 40 minute halves respectively), as well a reffing one women's sevens match and running the flag for 4 others. Midday to 5PM basically.

We got absolutely fucking AMBUSHED by Dukes, I might add. Last year they were all fit white boys who knew their rugby. This year they added big Islander lads - mix of union and league - and mopped the floor with us.

Check the old guy pretending to be a ref

I will say: the ladies are far easier to ref than the guys. Maybe its just Sevens, because you have no time to argue, but they generally just get on with things, unlike the "superstars".

@NTA bottom photo: ref momentarily forgets his job, gets flashbacks from the 80's and lines up the ball carrier in an awesome, yet illegal spear tackle...

"Not again Dad!!" Is heard clearly from the sidelines...

I assumed he was a retreating defender coming back into position from 2 scrums ago😁

Not sure if mentioned but Richard Kahui has signed with the Force.

Fortunately Twiggy has deep pockets to pay for the Foodbill 😉
