Hurricanes players playing club rugby this weekend in Wellington:

    Jonathan Taumateine (Marist St Pat's)
    Salesi Rayasi (Hutt OBM)
    Murphy Taramai (Upper Hutt Rams)
    Peter Umaga-Jensen (Wainuiomata)

Still trying to find out whether Hurricanes players from Hawke's Bay and Manawatu are playing club rugby this weekend, too.

    Can Danny Toala play FB

I like what I saw of him at 2nd 5 (Ive only seen him in one game though) and would like to see a bit more of him in the Canes

@Winger Yes, he has played a lot at fullback when he was still playing for Hastings Boys. Also a good goal kicker.

Edited to add that he also played at fullback for NZU20s during the Oceania U20 championship.

OK thanks. But not at NPC level. His best position is likely 2nd 5 so hopefully he gets a run there

@Winger He may have played at fullback for the Magpies during his first NPC year (from the bench). He didn't play there last year, because the Magpies desperately needed a good 12 and have several players capable playing at fullback. Tbh, I'm not sure his best position is 2nd 5 or fullback. He's a strong lad, so that makes him very handy at 12, but he definitely has the skills (including a good boot) for the 15 jersey.

Typical, the one time I don't want the Canes to actually care about a HB player they do - the Chiefs are in need of an 8.

@Stargazer how about we get all our young players on the field, can't go any worse than we have been. Why not try Toala at Fullback, give Rayasi a run instead of Lam considering he's leaving, move Barrett to his best position which will provide us with an extra playmaker. No doubt Holland will stick with the likes of Tiatia, Blackwell & Prinsep but that won't get us the result.

I would like to see a team close to this one for the Highlanders next week:

    1. Mafileo
    2. Aumua
    3. Lomax
    4. Scrafton
    5. Walker-Leawere
    6. Flanders
    7. Savea
    8. Evans
    9. Perenara
    10. Garden-Bachop
    11. Rayasi
    12. Barrett
    13. Proctor
    14. Aso
    15. Toala
    16. Coles
    17. Armstrong/Numia/Rakete-Stone (whoevers available)
    18. Fidow
    19. Fifita
    20. Kirifi
    21. Booth
    22. Laumape (Barrett to cover 10)
    23. Goosen

@Canes4life I like the look of that squad, but I'd put Jonah Lowe at 13 instead of Proctor. From what I've seen on social media, I'm not sure Numia is fit, so Rakete-Stones starting or on the bench at LH. Armstrong was awful, last Sunday.

And damn, how much the Canes need a good, young 10 ... I hope McClutchie has a blinder of a Mitre 10 Cup season, and that the Canes finally get their act together. Sorry, broken record, I know.

@Canes4life why leave Laumape on the bench? I believe JGB is making him look bad, Jordie will stand a better chance of igniting the backline and give Laumape the time and space he needs

I have it on good authority that the Chiefs did try to sign him.

But, Flanders had just one thing to say to them.

"Hi diddly ho means No, neighborinos!" šŸ™‚

@canefan nothing against Laumape, I just think if we shift Barrett to 12 it will help this backline more than having Laumape's power running game. We need tactical playmakers on the field right now and I think having Barrett at 12 will allow him to get his hands on the ball more often.

Unless we keep Laumape on the field and chuck Barrett into 10. Could be an option.

That would be my preference. He is definitely going to be better than JGB

    Good enough for the ABs!

@Tim He could be but he is listed to play fullback for, surprise surprise, MSP up at Maidstone Park against Upper Hutt in the Swindale Shield tomorrow. Accompanying him in that particular Club side is 5 year Hurricanes contract holder Billy Proctor. It can't be much longer before the Clubs down here do not start asking questions why so many Hurricanes players seem to be allocated to such a select few clubs.

    Your team looks good.

I'd prefer to see Barrett at 12. And Laumape as an impact player maybe with (maybe) Barrett at first. Laumape hasn't been in great form so far. And hes always been a bit one dimensional (and still is) that suits an impact at the end rather than starting.

Canes defense has been awful. Goosen is a good defender so I would keep him on the wing with Aso. I would also prefer Kirifi starting at 7. Give Toalo a start and see how he goes with Lam in the reserves.

the key for me though is dropping the crap defenders (starting with Armstrong and Blackwell) and keeping the good ones. And build from there but also give the new young players game time. But not too many at once. And maybe stop selecting barely adequate players like Tiatia and Prinsep.
