Hurricanes 2020

It was mentioned on a tv news piece.
I guess it depends on a couple of things. The club might be concerned about the player getting injured. Also Lam probably has a lot of off field stuff to sort out because he's moving to a new country.

@Stargazer why not?
-
@Canes4life Because the Canes don't need him. He isn't exactly a star player who adds a lot to the squad. I'd prefer a young NZ player who can be developed over a foreigner, who turns 29 before the 2021 season starts.
-
@Stargazer they don't need him? Lam won't be around for the whole comp, Lowe is pretty much always broken and Rayasi wasn't even meant to be in the Canes this year. Apart from Goosen, what other wing options do we have now that Vince Aso is at centre?
This is professional rugby, obviously the Canes didn't see anyone worthy enough in the NPC so they went for experience off-shore. Their faith has been rewarded with some quality shifts from Van Wyk pre covid so I don't see the big deal in them wanting to extend his stay.
-
@Canes4life This article isn't about extending van Wyk's contract for SR Aotearoa only. It says "beyond the 2020 season", so I assume they want him for the 2021 season.
Also, I'm pretty confident that Billy Proctor, Danny Toala and Chase Tiatia, who are in the 2020 squad, could do a pretty good job on the wing, if they had to, especially the first two. Edited to add your beloved Peter U-J.
Van Wyk's major shift was against ... the Sunwolves.
-
@Higgins Plumtree swooped because Van Wyk found himself behind the two Springbok wingers at the Sharks. I understand a mix of South African rugby political BS and a fresh change was the reason he packed his bags
@Stargazer he was strong against both the Chiefs and Blues aswell. If he's good enough to be in the Canes in 2021 then good on him. NZ has lost far too much IP, why not get some back. The rugby landscape is changing and I expect these contracts to come up more frequently to prevent Super Rugby from becoming, well, not so Super. Or are we too late for that already?
-
@Canes4life yea I think it is major downer this whole develop kiwi bullshit. There are 5 wingers in each squad that's 24 kiwi eligible wings. Picking squads on development makes the comp weaker and worse as a spectacle. I love watching foreign players have a crack on super rugby and think we need to see more of it.

@Yeetyaah said in Hurricanes 2020:
@Stargazer man he scored 3 tries in that one game that one time, must be good!
I'd take him over McKay and Faingaanuku in a heartbeat. Oh and Nabura.

Huge novelty seeing a saffa playing super rugby!
