Loved watching Cullen glide through for the third try again. What a runner!
Mark Hammett nearly cocked the whole thing up with a dreadful lineout throw on 78 minutes. The All Blacks' lineout was as brittle as a tea cup in the early 2000s.
Glad Jonah the Great was there to take Taine Randall's pass and score the winner. Legend!
Maxwell wasn't even that tall, he just looked it compared to Todd Blackadder who was already going pretty grey by this stage. It can't all have been Oliver and Hammetts fault !
Umm, yes it could quite feasibly have been Oliver and Hammets fault.
Wouldn’t have mattered if they were throwing to Steven Adams with those two.
A mate of mine studying at Otago watched Oliver practising his throwing on a basketball court. Said he simply didn't miss.

Pretty certain I could chuck a rugby ball and make it land on a basketball court. That's nothing to brag about.

If the fern is hitting the "pros" then everyone here is actually even sadder than we are.

Great game.
Randall was excellent, not least basketball assist for Jonah at end.
Flavell (and Josh K) coming on really turned the forward contest and allowed us back into it.
That said, but for two wayward Oliver throws and bad misses by Merhts we could have been out of sight by 20.
Agree on Randell. That was one of his best games in black. Not difficult to be the standout loose forward when the other two were Razor and Cribb though.
Had forgotten how ineffectual Razor was (BTW at that age had a Sam Cane look). Cribb stood out offensively, but...
No comb over ?

Weird that Josh Kronfeld got eased out in 2000 when he was still easily the best Openside in NZ until McCaw burst on the scene in the 2001 NPC.

Those were the days when I despised the wallabies ,
And i guess in hindsight it was a respect thing , they were pretty bloody good , had a lot of self belief and I felt threatened playing them
Isn't it ironic that much as we love to hate the Aussies the challenge of a strong Wallabies instills an intense feeling of uncertainty, and a little dread, which makes for the best of watching?

That reminds me about Kronfeld complaining when McCaw was selected:
"I haven't seen him play, but it seems incredible to me that they so easily can put No 7s in," said the Leicester-based player. ‘Before him it was Marty Holah off one Super 12 season; now they've got a guy off one NPC season. "You might as well just give All Black jerseys to everybody. The fact they picked guys off one NPC season is bloody incredible. "I understand [McCaw] has been playing well, but anyone can play well in a team that's going well, and Canterbury have been kicking ass by all accounts."

Fuck Mehrts was good.
At half of the game. Even he admits that defence wasn't part of his repertoire.
Mehrts was just being generous. Imagine if he didn’t let Kronfeld take all those tackles, Josh would never have been the player he was. The ultimate team man is Mehrts.

Funnily enough I watched this game on Saturday on youtube.
-
What a weird All Black selection - the loose trio were clones of eachother.
-
That centre pairing of Alatini and Ieremia were fantastic.
-
Htf did Justin Marshall win 70-odd caps, he had awful pass.
-
Wow Larkham and Gregan were good.
-
Mortlock, Roff, Umaga and Lomu must be the biggest wingers ever selected for a game.
-
Mexted was a terrible commentator. Maxwell gave away four ridiculously cynical penalties and Mexted just pretended to not understand the rules. Just shut the fudge up.

Norm just following the 'saders' play book.

It might have helped him if the rest of the players were on the same page as him and they could overload the Watson's decision making ability through sheer volume of "boundary pushing" (not that any team would ever consider that as an approach)
It was remarkable how much less jersey pulling, clearing beyond the ruck and accidentally getting in the way there was back then.

I remember at the time railing against the John Hart-initiated mindset of picking almost a 'tight three, loose five' with lock/flanker hybrids running around all over the place. Only 20 years later and I still feel passionate about it - two tall locks, one open, one tight and a loose forward trio that complements each other.
Damn kids get off my lawn

There are periods in that test where the Aussie attack led by these two was so dominant. They were getting clean ball and had runners just lining up. Scary to watch at the time...

Had it not been for that first six minutes, the All Blacks would've been well beaten in that Test.

The team would have been oh so tasty with BBBR and Sam W, with Josh starting.
