@Nepia from memory he took one of the weaker 'paper' squads that they'd had in the first few years of Super 12 and didn't finish 11th. At the time that genuinely felt like a good Chiefs season!!
Your definition of bloody good and mine differ but you get the like for the bold.
We started off a very low base. 1998 was the closest I remember us getting to not-mud, but a shithouse loss against the Tah's killed any late semi final chance.
You're lucky that eventually a quality coach in the form of Ian Foster came along to be bloody bloody good and get you to the semis.
Mitchell got the All Blacks job out of the Chiefs not finishing 11th
Foster kept a job for as long as he wanted it just by making the semi finals for the first time in 2004...Rennie really fucked up with his strategy of winning.
Yep, no-one likes a showoff. Much better to be a Hammateur!

John Mitchell gets an awful lot of crap for a bloke that won two out of two Tri-Nations, won back the bledisloe (after how many years?) Coached a team that put 50 past Aus and SA away in consecutive weeks.
I'm not saying he was a great coach, but he's far from terrible. His assistant coaching results would point to that. John's problem appears to be his complete inability to get along with people when he is in charge.
Which is actually my point. Coaching wise, he was actually very handy.
Inexperience meant he didn’t get all the stuff that went with it. The SF humbling by a Jones game plan repeated itself against a 2WC coach, so perhaps some of the issues there not just Mitch.
-
@MajorRage although I think you can roll back to that try Mils scored that wasnt given, turned out to be pivotal.
If it had been awarded, I reckon we run away with that game, as it was, Aus snaffled that pass and ran >90m to take the momentum, and the game
-
@taniwharugby Can't agree with that. Yes, a turning point, but the Aussies rumbled us all day with their game plan.
-
Mitchell was clearly out coached for that semi-final. Eddie worked out the secret was to not give the All Blacks counter-attack ball. Every kick went into the grandstand.
-
I think Mitch is and always has been a fantastic coach, unfort man-management and managing the press has not been a strong point.
He did get the AB job very early and probably was not at all ready to deal with that side of things- nor was the NZ press ready for 'The Journey' etc.
Possibly he is the reason Razor was overlooked at this early stage in his career -

I heard Mortlock speak about it at a function. He said Eddie Jones had been almost exclusively planning for the RWC semi final game 03 v ABs since the Bledisloe that year.

Yep, he did the same last year too. The performance in the final was telling.

At an "Audience with Eddie Jones", the man himself said pretty much the same thing re the last RWC. From the get go his focus was on a potential SF with NZ and Eddie's "journey" was all about reaching that game with a realistic chance of winning. Maybe he should have thought about the Boks too
Listening to him talk and answer questions in a non media and friendly atmosphere was really interesting and one thing rang loud and clear - he has a blind spot, almost an obessession with the All Blacks. He actually said that we (be it Aus or England) cannot compete with their athleticism.
-
@taniwharugby Every time I think about that game I think about that moment. It obviousy got overshadowed by the intercept try but I feel that moment changed the game.

Interestingly, with TMO that would be a dead set try these days. Mils was awesome. So was Leon - just not at Centre

Those 50 point drubbings were some of the best rugby the All Blacks have ever played. We blew them off the park. He was also a very early adopter of using the bench as a weapon - E.G. unleashing a fizzing Meeuws in the final quarter - which set the ABs apart in the years to come.
If Mils gets rightly awarded that try in the semi, then we break the Aussies backs and march into the final as odds on favourites. Then he gets remembered very differently.

Where his eight man scrum still can't push six poms backwards..?

Maybe Rodders gets awarded the try this time.

As long as Dickinson isn't the ref, we'd probably do OK.

And maybe Dougie gets called for offside for once. 😳

I also think his public persona/personality doesn't/didn't do him any favours either (not saying ideally it should matter but it does). He's an aloof kind of bloke. Talk of journeys etc.
which no one would have given a toss about if he had won the World Cup like we all pretty much expected.
I have my doubts about that. He alienated the public, the media, the administrators, the sponsors.
As I've said previously Keith Quinn's book on the '03 RWC had a quote about how it would be "awkward" if the ABs actually won.
