UFC 189

WOW!!!

Matt Brown was hard as nails. But how is he only on the prelim card?

Pickett v Almeida
Kid's (Almeida) got skills and toughness. What a finish.

Nelson v Thatch
Great combo from Nelson to put Thatch on his arse. Seen plenty of fights stopped there. Thatch covered up well, but Nelson too good and too strong to finish with rear naked choke.

Bermudez v Stephens
A technical brawl of the highest order, with a superb knee from Stephens to finish it.

Lawler v MacDonald
Fantastic footwork, octagon management and patience from Lawler to wear down and beat up a very game MacDonald, and then a cracking headkick from MacDonald to finish the third round and rock Lawler.

Awesome start to the 4th for MacDonald, Lawler was rocked and lost his footwork. But finished the round the stronger.

The punishent was too much for MacDonald and he folded in the fifth.

A cracking Championship fight.

One of the best.

McGregor v Mendes
Christ you wouldn't mess with Sinead O'Connor. What a way to start us off.

Bruce Buffer was off the charts.

McGregor full of antics and scoring, but Mendes finished the round strong and took it.

Mendes takes it to the floor for 4 minutes of round 2, McGregor takes a whole gang of elbows, slips the submission attempt and then finishes Mendes with seconds to go in the round.

Believe the hype.

'D'ya like dags?'

Boxing can't compete with a card like that.
-

Fox sometimes insist on getting better fights than all prelim scrubs, plus it was meant to be a big card ("Fight Week" is meant to be the UFC's Wrestlemania) and some fighters insist on headlining the prelims because they think they'll be seen by more people than on the PPV itself (Faber and Tate have both done this). I think it's dumb because being on the PPV itself makes them seem like a bigger star than if they're just headlining the prelims.

Anyway, incredible card. Up there with the best cards UFC has ever had and Rory/Robbie was one of the best fights they've ever had. I feel really bad for Rory though, his nose was fucked and he'll probably take the next 6 months to a year off just to get it repaired.

Great to see loud mouth McGregor get the win. I've seen a lot of people talk down about him because Mendes only had two weeks to train for the fight, managed to take him down a number of times and his cardio wasn't great but you also have to remember that a) Body strikes take a huge hit to cardio and McGregor was landing them every time they were standing and b) McGregor trained to fight a striker, not a wrestler, so he's heavily disadvantaged too. Aldo/McGregor should be a huge, huge fight. I'm looking forward to it.
-

UFC 190 just happened. Eh. Insanely long and boring card up until the main event (why on earth were those TUF Brazil fights on the PPV?!) but Ronda delivered. Sounds like the buyrate will dwarf UFC 189's too, which was already meant to have done really well (current estimate is just 800k+, could be as high as 1mil, we won't get an accurate number for months because US cable companies have trouble counting numbers).

Reebok payouts for the show have been confirmed and they're an absolute joke:

$10k for Shogun, who fought in the semi-main and has been a star for years. Pathetic. He probably made well over 10 times that with his old sponsors.

Palhares continued to prove himself to be a giant fucking psychopath on the WSOF show, even if you ignore the eye gouging claims (I didn't see but it doesn't sound like they're bullshit). He caught Shields in a kimura, Shields tapped and then the asshole cranked his arm back as far as he could anyway. Sounds like he might be stripped of his title but he really should be banned for life, the fact that WSOF even hired him after he did the exact same thing numerous times in the UFC says a lot about that promotion. I don't get why the refs aren't wise to his bullshit either and don't just disqualify him on the spot. I wouldn't care if Shields tapped, I'd award him the win anyway.

Oh and the Diaz brothers and their stupid friends continued to be fucking idiots, starting a fight with Khabib at the WSOF show. Guess they have to look tough because they sure as hell couldn't beat him in the ring. I wouldn't mind seeing Nick Diaz vs Khabib though, he'd still probably throw him around like a ragdoll.
-

Ronda Rousey in equal measure terrifies and arouses me. It's an interesting mix.

She's right about this suspension though.
-

Rousey's stand up looked great against amateurs but embarrassingly shit against someone who had some experience. She should've listened to her mother a long time ago and ditched that joke of a striking coach Edmund. Then instead of believing all the hype about her being a rounded fighter, stuck to her strengths, judo, against Holm. Too arrogant.

Oh well, this should lead to some interesting fights in that division now. Assuming they don't go straight to the rematch (which I hope they don't), there could be some interesting match ups for Holm.
Pretty great PPV overall. The first fight on the main card sucked but Whittaker, Hunt and Joanna were awesome. Then the main event craziness topped it off.
-

The big girl got schooled.

-

Nite nite princess. Somewhat amusing after
Rhonda was all up in Holm's grill at the weigh in.
-

She certainly talks the game like a promoters dream!

-

I am really glad she got knocked out. The UFC needed that result. And i think Riousey did as well, she was going off the track.

-

The UFC have two big draws at the moment, Rousey and McGregor, and given that McGregor is a huge underdog against Aldo, Rousey's loss is the worst possible thing that could've happened. It's like the one-two punch of GSP retiring and Anderson Silva getting knocked out all over again. Dana was pretty obviously upset afterwards.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's good for MMA and probably for Rousey as well, but for the UFC itself? Not really.
