And doesn't he punch above his fucking weight!

-

I remember thinking we might win this when Kane Douglas got injured. Douglas is one of those "depth" players. I will define what I mean. Just when you figure you have seen off the contributions and most you can expect from your Folau's, Beales, Mitchells, AACs, and the back row boys and you figure what else can they hurt you with - wham you get smashed in a tackle by Douglas. He is a real asset on the field for their team and extends the depth and number of players who can make plays on the field or more importantly who won't fuck up.

When he went off and I saw Mumm come on I didn't know for sure but I suspected that he would make some errors. It was towards the end of the match in the end. Dean Mumm knocked it on with 69 minutes showing on the clock and Aussie down by 7. When they next touched the ball there were 5 minutes left and down by 10. Basically they were up the boohai.

Some of our boys knocked it on too, e.g. Moody - but that particular knock on by Mumm virtually sealed the match.

I did feel sorry for Australia when the forward pass wasn't called and we ended up kicking a 3 point penalty shortly thereafter and perhaps the game ends up closer than 4 points at one stage.

But like everyone has said there were swings and round abouts.

I didn't really come here to post that detailed point about Douglas and Mumm - what I really wanted to say is that the reality of all of this sank in around 2 or 3 o'clock today.

All those years of lost WC knock out matches weren't wasted. We put all our lessons into action today and we lifted into another gear when Australia came storming back. Without all that heart ache and advanced preparations for different scenarios maybe the game ends a lot closer.

But just as another poster said, or a couple of you said, it was that long raking kick by Carter and more importantly the emotion afterwards. He let rip on the forwards and told them to lift. DC wanted it.

Someone said they did quiet fist bumps around the house. I was just elated as I was driving the car this afternoon. Winning a world cup doesn't happen every day of the week. And with all these retirements we may not get up next time in 2019 as players like DC and McCaw don't grow on trees.

I have watched the game twice so far.
-

Some more random points

* Thanks to the injury gods. Where ever you are. Maybe this tournament ends differently if one or two of our key players went down.

* Props to TKB - he came on with 10 minutes to go on a hiding to nothing. If he plays well he gets no kudos as there are 10 minutes left. He fucks up and we lost then he will be vilified from pillar to post. He faces his first scrum and it is a bit of a mess and he delays feeding it long enough that it gets reset. And on the next one we get a penalty. May have been a nothing play but the ref was egging him on to put it in. He didn't fuck up is all I am think I am trying to say. Pat on the back lad.
-

yeah we had a pretty good run, not only with injuries plus 'peaking' given all the angst about the form in pool play.

So many of our players had buggar all minutes too: Taylor, Fekitoa, Messam, Romano, TJP, Slade, Naholo
-

Turns out you can get away with three games in a row at RWC knockout stage after all (so long as they are injury free) -

we didnt stay injury free last time, I guess they thought theyd run an uninjured one to see how that went?

Typically good price by sumo....

Have to admit; I haven't been excited by rugby for a long time - but it was great to see the guys get over the line this morning.

Nonu especially - still remember when he was being lambasted for not being able to hang onto the ball. What a game.
-

The way he talks about the Wallabies, the love and respect he clearly has for the jersey and his need for his players to show same respect, Michael Cheika sounds very much like our own coach
-

How many tackles did Carter and McCaw make between 75-78 mins? They seemed to be everywhere in that defensive stand. Good discipline from the ABs too.
-

Yep, I thought our discipline was exemplary. We simply had to rein it in after conceding so many penalties against the Boks in the semi.

We really lifted the tempo afetr the Smith YC , and when we did, Aus couldn't live with us.
-

I thought that was a big difference too. We could keep our big players on for longer. Subbing Fardy seemed weird.

Fardy was dropping off tackles. He dropped off three big ones... Then got subbed. He was playing well for the AB's at the time I thought. -

Carter might have missed a couple, but man he sure did make a truckload of tackles last night. He was everywhere on the field especially in cover defense. -

So through my 2nd viewing now (admittedly I have worked my way through a bottle of champagne, a few beers and a quality bottle of red this afternoon - its been a good day, so please take with a grain of salt...), here are some random thoughts, focussing on stuff that hasn't been discussed at length already in this thread:

- Camera work was so frustrating, aerial shots and switching way too much

- Savea was way better than I thought in the 1st half, really busy and always beat the first guy enough to require the attention of another. NMS also, never dies with the ball, never gets shunted back in an offensive tackle.

- The obstruction rule where you run into your own player - is that an actual rule now that if the tackle is "effected", there is no penalty, or just an interpretation from Owens? Saw this twice in the first half.

- Speaking of obstruction, I hate the rule for a kick chase where a defender only has to "not deviate" his line to be legal. This is so daft. Watch Mitchell size up the Savea line on a kick chase, then run "straight" into his way to prevent him challenging for the ball. Mitchell was running at 45 degrees from where the ball was going to land with zero intention of challenging for it - perfectly legal, just a daft rule

- On daft rules, what about the SBW slap-down - why should this be a knock-on? Perfectly legal "tackle", but should be open play for mine, its just a knock-back by SBW isn't it?

- Conrad's D in the 1st half was insane

- So rare for AB's to have such an efficient lineout - we all remember too well watching Anton under/overthrow them, or even Kev with his hand cupping his ear wanting a repeat of the call. I now understand what it must have felt like to be a Bokke supporter when Victor and Bakkes were in their primes, and I like it

- Kuridrani's D was as poor as expected (Nonu running straight past his shoulder a great example) - and on that note, while our first try was wonderful to watch, it has to be said that the Wobbly D line was massively disjointed there.

- I didn't think Kepu's high shot on DC was that bad - sure it was high, but wasn't swinging. No way its a yellow, that's why we have a penalty rule. Hoopah needs to watch those "no look" falling shoulder charges though.

- The Carter clearing kick at 67mins - looks so simple, but is just class

- For NZ - Jerome Fucking Kaino. And DC - "Get up! Get up!!!" Our D line line was so disciplined in the last 10, was amazing. As my 6yr old said watching live, "the Wallabies are going backwards!"

- For Oz, what could have been - if Folau was fit, and Gits (in particular) and Douglas stayed on, it could have been a different game. As NTA said earlier, Foley was really good.

just a quality final all up.

what a good day,
-
Far out. Twickenham threw one hell of a party last night!!! The place went off after the final whistle.
To all the English who made the night so special, in the bars at the ground. Thank you! Thank you for supporting our team, thank you for the hospitality, thank you for the experience.
I was there to watch the AB's arrive at the ground, and was there again to watch them get on the coach after the game. Totally awesome. -

I thought it could have been a red in real time. Went past horizontal, was only saved by the fact that Mitchell didn't fall on his head.

Would have been a real shame, and I thought Owens made the right call in the end.

C'mon Baabaa, you can't watch that tackle and not see the role that Hooper plays* in making it look worse. It could have been a red card but that would have been idiotic! As Crucial notes the red is fair enough, but as I noted when the game was being played Oz were lucky to keep Kepu on the field for 80 minutes.

Oz TV have been great, they've played the game half a million times and played highlights packages of the other finals (how good was Piri's kick to get us to the lineout that Woody scored from, right?) so I've been watching different parts all day.

*Not purposely.
