I honestly don't know why they've felt the necessity to cancel the games two days before they're due to be played. Why wouldn't you just say we're very worried and there's a strong prospect that we may need to cancel and we'll make a decision at 10am on game day?
I can't recall a cricket match ever being cancelled before it was due to start.
@gt12 might be able to comment on what usually happens in Japan but my only guess is they didn't want lots of extra people in cities that were meant to be in lock down and/or evacuated. Agree it seems crazy to just flat out cancel it this far out.
I think they are worried about the travel - trains will probably get shut down, so many ppl might not be able to make it to venues. Nevertheless, I don't see why that should influence them to cancel games two days out.
Just to add to this, there are probably people traveling on the morning or evening of these games, so by canceling now theyโll avoid having some people without accommodation or missing further events if games did get cancelled on the day.
Thatโs pretty weak sauce, but I have seen two or three posts on social media from ppl talking about how they can now cancel their Shinkansen tickets etc. so, the decisions looks like one to give clarity to local fans and those traveling between matches (eg, I have a friend who was meant to be at one QF in Tokyo and one in Oita with a morning flight in between).

@Billy-Tell Especially for Parisse, as he was going to play his last game vs the ABs. He also made his debut against the ABs in 2002 so that would have been a great story.
A 17 year pro career is nothing to sneeze at, even for @MN5
Shame he didnโt get that first and last moment. ABs probably wouldโve given him a nice send off on the field after the game too.
And to complete the connection, Parisse's first game for Italy at a RWC was in 2003 against......NZ. I was at that test in Melbourne.
Me too. Tough night watching Umaga get injured.

I have some sympathy for the fans as my travel plans were interrupted by the last typhoon two weeks ago in Nagasaki. And the year before two while I was in the Ryukus.
So multiply my issues by something in the vicinity of 300,000 fans at a guess.

before seeing what the weather was like on the day?
They really could look like idiots - chances are they won't - but if I had gone all the way there, had tickets, paid for a hotel- the weather is O.K. I would be demanding some answers. I am already, as this just seems dumb. Do it on the morning of the match.
Also, for the benefit of the travelling fans, if you cancel the day of the match, they'll already be in the city and have accommodation sorted. However, now travelling fans have to cancel their existing travel and accommodation plans, find new accommodation where they are currently situated - which might not be available - and find safe shelter.

Seems like a total clusterfuck of a situation, the simplest solution would have been to wait until the last minute. There was no plan B to have to fall back on early

Italy did well.
Defence was rock solid in holding the ABs to a nil all draw. And their attack and ability to put points on the board was on par with most of their tests over the past few years....

Fuck the travelling fans. They can piss it up at in front of a telly like the plebs,
AND have a great "where were you when..." story!
I want my Saturday rugby day back!!๐
I wanna watch me boys at the world cup!
Bah!
I'm one of the travellin' fans, and I completely agree.
I was looking forward very much to an 8-hour rugby marathon, sitting in a pub, with lethal-level winds/rain outside. And now... I get Ireland vs Samoa. And that's it. Bullshit.
Fingers very much crossed that Japan-Scotland goes ahead, as that's gotta be awesome. With a capital "O". -
From Daily Telegraph
In a development that seems sure to cloud the rest of the tournament and have ramifications way into the future, insiders claim that the match between the All Blacks and Italy could have been postponed until Monday, but that the All Blacks were not willing to consider a turnaround of just five days between their final pool game and their quarter-final, which is due to be played on Saturday 19th October.

Stopped reading right there. Insiders claim ffs, so no actual evidence?

Had to be the All Blacks fault somehow.

@Derm-McCrum the "insiders" are bullshitting. It's against the rules of the tournament to postpone a pool match. Click bait

Yeah I thought it was only finals games that could be postponed.
You just know even if WR came out and denied it the telegraph smear โ neutralsโ are going to add this to the list of things they endlessly thrashwank about like the refs favouring the abs etc etc.

@No-Quarter But in this day and age, I'd imagine 90 percent of people have pre-paid holiday accommodation and will turn up there anyway.
But once there they will now stay inside their accommodation and not venture out into the weather.
