RWC: Speculation About Read Being Cited
-
Both the NZ Herald and Stuff are running unsourced and speculative stories about Kieran Read possibly being cited over a “dangerous no-arms” tackle on Canada’s blindslide flanker Lucas Rumball.
Is there any substance to this? Or is it, as I suspect, a beaten-up piece of click bait constructed out of nothing much at all?
My impression was it was pretty innocuous, the player being so low to the ground (and falling) that to construct Read’s action as deliberate foul play would be a mammoth stretch.
But in the new climate of paranoia about the judicial system at the World Cup, who can tell??

Just "them" trying to get an AB. It's more than clickbait but it is bullshit.

That article references contact with the head.
I can only recall one no-arms tackle by Read. It was below the players knees. Where was the head contact? Did I miss something? And just to add - a rubbish piece of journalism. As @Bones said, doesn't even come close to meeting the RC threshold.

There is a small twitterati campagin to suggest he targeted and hit the head and neck of the bloke behind the ball carrier (from the view of the camera).
Not one actual journalist has said anything tho. Which shows just how serious is being taken.

If he can do that, then he is even more talented than I have given him credit for in the past.
Laughable.
But, look on the bright side. If everyone (and by that I just mean the rabid rabbits on social media and well-known outrage-scribes) are still what-abouting the All Blacks, then clearly you're still the most feared rugby team around.
Accept the compliment.

Book him. 6 weeks. No reductions.
Ruthless, menacing and callous - even down to targeting two blokes, makes it worth at least twice as much as any other citing.
TWELVE WEEKS!!!

I think the real story here is the increasing weaponisation of social media to build pressure on individual players and teams - a trend which is amplified by an increasingly desperate media now dependent on calculated outrage and a click-driven business model. Notice how there are no actual quoted sources in the story. It’s a thumb-sucker. To quote Orange Man, it’s fake news.

Not too smart by the AB captain considering what has gone on at this tournament. He seems to have be taking the phrase "use your head" too literally. Arms please fella.
There is a level of bullshit here though
The impact was less than 12 inches above the turf.
Non issue.

It's a strange one. Whilst there is no doubt he gets low, it's hard to deny he doesn't attempt to use his arms in any way. It's certainly penalty worthy.
The whole idea of an attacking player getting low is to make him harder to tackle. A defender doesn't just get to negate that by launching his shoulders at the attackers shins.
Is it citing worthy? Nah, hard to go there as its not dangerous. But it's definitely not cricket.

If you're launching yourself at someone's knees without trying to tackle, that's dangerous play and should be penalised.
