If Japan won this it would it be bigger than the win against the Boks in 2015?
No chance of that happening.

Isn't this result kind of bad for us and potentially good for the Boks?
Potentially yes. But I think Ireland’s gameplan has been found out. They also rely on sexton who has been under an injury cloud. They also can’t take the Samoa game for granted so only Russia can get the B team. If they play like today though, NZ wouldn’t be losing.
How many of the team that just lost to Japan were their best team or was it all second stringers? Just wondering if total lack of depth partially explains the loss.
It was close to first team: Sexton, Aki, Henshaw injured. Otherwise that was pretty much their top 23.

now would be a good time to visit planet rubgy, the swarm as they call Irish fans are deeply and understandably unpopular
Normally avoid PR like the plague, but this post was bloody priceless:
"One of the most one sided ref performances I’ve ever seen. That said, Japan played us off the pitch and fully deserved their win, well done."
This was my favourite from the swarm on pr
Well done to Joe for staying so calm knowing that somebody in that stadium is now going around with a suitcase full of yen
Irish fans gunna irish fan
This was good though, fairplay to the lad
Hahahaha!!! Would hate to be Irish right now... Oh wait, I am.

we have to win all our games once we get out of pool play, be it Ireland, Scotland, Samoa or Japan, it makes zero difference who it is.
Having an easy quarter final makes a big difference.
Exactly. Having an “easy” quarter makes a HUGE difference. Saying “we have to beat whoever we play anyway” is a massive over simplification.
People are getting way ahead of themselves thinking this result means Ireland are easy beats. The Boks weren’t in 2015 after getting done by japan.
It will be shit if this results in the Boks getting the easy run through the quarters and IMO would increase their chances of winning the whole thing a fair bit.

Did the boks play their top team against Japan?

Don’t know, don’t care. If you think Ireland are finished you are nuts.

Dunno about that, I think conditions really don’t suit this Irish side that like to grind teams down through the forwards. I thought they’d go up a gear in the 2nd 40 and win comfortably, but Japan had run them off their feet; the Irish pack was absolutely knackered. Every team has a pretty clear blueprint to follow now.

@pukunui Exactly. People tend to foolishly underrate or overrate a team based on one performance. If we played Ireland in the quarter final, there's no guarantees that we will won it.
I don't see it as being one game, not very genuine to say that. Ireland have been on the decline all year.

Another superb whine here , totally not taking anything away from Japan here
It wasn’t interpretation - it was inconsistency- it was one of the most ridiculous hometown refereeing performances in World Cup history. But I’m not taking anything away from Japan they played brilliantly and I’m delighted they got the win they deserved.

That's fair but I think the bastards may have one big game left in them.

Ireland can still finish top no? Even if they end up evens with Japan on wins they can pip them on bonus points if (if) they deal to Samoa and Russia.
