That bait was the equivalent of throwing a 24 pack of KFC over the side to catch a Piri Weepu fish who hasn't eaten in 6 weeks.

Mark Hammett made that 2003 squad!

f*#k you and your (admittedly classy) Barbarians XV.

@Duluth farken hell, I never remembered that but do you mean to tell me Cully never played a RWC game at 15? No wonder people spat at John Hart's horse!

Began in 96, played centre in 99, lame by 2003

I wonder if this sort of heresy to Cullen fanboys still gets the spittle flecked outrage at cue ball ?

This fanboy is in a spittle flecked outrage with @mariner4life (and obviously always with cue ball) - Cullen was the best fullback in NZ in 2003 (just not the 1996 version). 😡

I knew it would be you to take the bait . I disagree, also if you really really want to make the team going on tv and slagging off the coach is a stupid thing to do .

Also he has no Maori blood .

We are going to need a bigger boat .

I take it you were too busy reading Whaleoil to watch any S12 in 2003.

Watched every canes game , wasn’t convinced.

Also I didn’t...........I mean Cameron Slater didn’t start whaleoil till 2008

My apologies I'm unaware of the history - also, did Whaleoil really only start in 2008? I thought his prime sniping time would have been pre 2008?

Cullen was great in 2003 unless you compare him with 1996-1998 Cullen. He was like late Blanco as opposed to early Blanco.

    Apologies 2005 https://thespinoff.co.nz/media/01-08-2019/rip-whaleoil-net-nz-2005-2019/

Nope , thought he had lost his edge by 2003 and then he went on a current affairs show slagging off the coach and predicting Ben Atiga would be called up in his place .

Actually I thought he lost it earlier than that, it’s a matter of record Cullen was on a par with Kelleher in the iq stakes and I watched Jeff Wilson make an absolute fool out of him in about 2001 when he was fullback too . Quite often players who lose a yard or two of pace develop a rat cunning through experience to cover for it. All trolling aside I never really saw that in Cullen after about 2000 or so when his knees really started to give out.

I'm not sure on 2001 and mentioning Wilson and fullback is guaranteed to raise my heckles, pity he couldn't use those extra brains to not be constantly out of position at Twickenham in 1999. 😉

But, Cullen had a great S12 in 2003 as a mature fullback. He'd lost that stepping ability but still had straight line pace and anticipation - I'd argue he had that cunning you mention, clearly you remember different?

    Yeah I just didn’t see it .

I do love the story about Wayne Bennett being invited to talk to the 2007 rwc squad after the loss and tearing into the coaches about playing people out of position.

Three rwcs with a fullback at centre ffs .

To be fair, we won the first one with a centre at fullback! 🙂

So what you're saying is Ben Smith to centre?

    A ridiculous suggestion!

    Anton Lienert-Brown to fullback!

Good thing we've learnt our lesson. Imagine moving one of our best players on the eve of a rwc??

In 2011 we played a midfielder on the wing in a winning effort

I don’t think he was even close to the best. I would’ve even had Howlett at fullback ahead of Cully that year.

Thinking about the squad makeup there was Mils, Rangi, Howlett and Blair. No room for an ageing Cully.

Are you looking at the team on paper or how he played that year? Cullen had an excellent Super campaign. Blair? 🤣

12 Taylor, Little, Ieremia, Mauger, McAlister, Nonu

Don't really remember Taylor, Nonu would be my pick but I always rated Ieremia .

Carter has to be in front for the 10 jersey for his work in 2015 (and the sublime lines he carved in 2003)

Taylor would be just behind Nonu on this list- Maa would out weigh him by 30kg but as far a reliable 12 Taylor was vital. He carted up tackled everything and chased every kick like his life depended on it. I think Graham Lowe named him as a player he would love to have had back in the day.

I think centre will be the hardest position to pick for me personally - Stanley, Bunce and Smith all worthy contenders.

Maybe it would have been Umaga if:

    1. Hart had seen the future and gone Umaga at 13 instead of Cullen.
    2. Mitchell had played him.
    3. He had hung on until 2007 and we'd miraculously beaten the French with a drop goal after he directed the team to set for one with 10 minutes to go.

    Sadly none of that happened.
