Lima is homesick and eating up all that angst with a lot of pies. Get him home and onto the stairmaster pronto

It depends if the Canes want a ready-made starter with some experience or another 1st 5 to compete with Smith and Garden-Bachop for that position. I'm sure there are a few of the latter off-contract.

@Canes4life Plumtree loves Lam so unlikely to drop him. even though his defense is poor at times.
So maybe Barrett at 13 and Goosen at FB (VG the few times he has started)

@Higgins oh yes I forgot about Leaupepe. No fixation mate, I'm one of those that were actually against him being one of our locks because of his height and I still do. I just think that's most likely the team Plumtree will look to in the bigger games. To be fair to Blackwell his workload last year was impressive.

Hes ordinary (Blackwell). surely they can find someone better.

Why would you completely shut the door on Cruden or Sopoaga ... that’s some short sighted thinking by the Canes CEO.

@Nepia You're making assumptions. Sopoaga is still under contract in 2020. And maybe Cruden doesn't want to come back? Who knows? I assume they have more facts than we have.

I'm not making assumptions on whether they would/wont come back, I'm just commenting on the CEO saying he's happy to draw a line through them both.

@Nepia Maybe he is drawing a line through them both because he already knows they're not available for some reason?

Does anyone know the rules on SR squad sizes? Like X full time players, Y wider training. Along with the squad salary cap?

@Machpants The 2016-2018 Employment Collective specified contracting budget of $4.65 million per team, with 32 full contracted players - maximum retainer $195,000, minimum $75,000. An additional six players can be contracted (previously called WTG) who assemble fulltime and with retainers of $50,000.

So there is a suggestion on the Chiefs 2020 thread that we have signed Counties halfback Jonathan Taumateine for next year.

    Re-signed:
    Wes Goosen (2021)
    Peter Umaga-Jensen (2021)
    Ben May (2020)

Three more established Hurricanes players have extended their contracts at the club.

Proven try scorer Wes Goosen and exciting young midfielder Peter Umaga-Jensen have signed on until at least the end of the 2021 Investec Super Rugby season.

They will be joined in next year's squad by vastly experienced prop Ben May who returns for his ninth season with the Hurricanes.

Goosen, 23, has scored 19 tries in his 37 appearances since he made his debut in 2016 against the Reds when he crossed with his first touch in Super Rugby.

While he has played the majority of his rugby at the Hurricanes on the wing, Goosen also has the ability to play in the midfield and at fullback.

Umaga-Jensen, 21, made his debut against the Reds in 2018 but suffered a shoulder injury playing for the Wellington Lions in the Mitre 10 Cup. After a lengthy period of rehabilitation, he was selected several times for the back end of the 2019 season and impressed with his all-round play.

The evergreen May, 36, has agreed to return for another year after demonstrating his value on and off the field in 2019.

Although he had previously played for the Crusaders and Chiefs, it is at the Hurricanes where he has firmly established himself having played 89 matches in his 124-game Super Rugby career.

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree believed May's leadership skills continue to be a great asset while his ability to maintain the highest standards of professionalism was a great example to team-mates.

"Wes and Peter are two young guys who we see as having big futures at the Hurricanes," he said. "We have seen what Wes is capable of over the last three seasons while Peter just gets better with every challenge thrown at him."

Trio extend their time at the Hurricanes

@Stargazer great signings in Wes and PUJ, not so sure about May. Probably has one year left in him.

@Stargazer If we want to be competitive we need a fully formed quality 10, waiting waiting.....

@canefan problem is we can't just pull one out of thin air. I can see us pinning all our hopes on either Fletcher Smith or Jackson Garden Bachop. I feel we will still have the experience and firepower in all other positions to make the playoffs but you really need someone with a bit more starch and big-game experience at 10 if you are wanting to win this competition.

@Canes4life Interestingly, Wes Goosen was already signed for 2020. They've now extended it with one extra year.

It feels like the pack will improve, but we will be in a Jimmy Gopperth type situation where we lack the right person steering the cutter. Our only hope is they can magic someone off another franchise or from the NH
