The whole ordeal has been laughable. A shortlist of 40 of the most pathetic designs I have ever seen and then a top 4 of the most pathetic designs selected by a bunch of no hoper loser.

There is no way our flag will change to one of these piss weak ones.

Yes mad.

pretty easy to criticise the process, but i dont see any better ideas on how it could have been done (to appease everyone...) being put forward...maybe you change the people selecting, but you will still draw the same criticisms of them from some corners.

After seeing some of the sort of people who are getting behind the red peak and their fairly transparent pathetic motives ( they think Key is the anti Christ) I'd quite like to distance myself from it. Sneering left wing piston wristed gibbons like Russel Brown who have been derisive of the whole idea of change and the process suddenly supporting a design more of less because it isn't in the final four and it's trending on twitter are not really people I'd like to be associated with.
I'm thinking the status quo is likely to win and an opportunity a wasted. If labour somehow get into govt any changes they try to make are quite likely to get rat fucked by the likes of Cameron Slater for no other reason than just because they can , karma is a bitch.

Do you like any of the final 4 designs enough to change to one of them jegga?

I'm not disagreeing with anything you've said there, just curious.

Hypnoflag and the fern no way, the Lockwood designs are ok and at least different to the aussie one . Since the red peak is unlikely to be included which do you want ?

I could live with one of the Lockwood designs but I don't think I will vote to change it based on the options, though I was/am in favour of changing it.

I can't picture the Koru or the black fern flag in the same situation, it'd be a safe bet on the flag we have now winning and the people who have whined throughout moaning about what a waste of money the whole thing was.

The only way the flag would be changed is with something New Zealanders already relate to and that is a black flag with a fern on it. Thats it. I am not saying that should be the flag I am just saying that no johnny come lately design flag is going to ursurp the one we have had since our country was born.

I've seen letters to the editors at big city dailies and small town weeklies in the 1960s, when memories about war were still fresh in Canada saying exactly the same thing. Always about the service men, the new flag is a disgrace that dishonours the sacrifices, the fallen, those who "died for the flag," etc. Most of 'em got over it, or passed away, and a new generation has little-or-no idea what the fuss was about.

I never said anything about it being a disgrace , I don't like those two options and the koru in particular looks silly IMHO .

Congratulations BSG on completely missing the point of my post, preferring to nitpick to try and make yourself look superior.

The current flag is the incumbent, no flag that was just designed yesterday which barely anyone can relate to and has zero meaning is going to replace it.

You had a point? My bad. I thought when you said that 'I am just saying that no johnny come lately design flag is going to usurp the one we have had since our country was born." you meant

'I am just saying that no johnny come lately design flag is going to usurp the one we have had since our country was born.'

Which is clear;y a nonsense... as the current flag is our 3rd flag... and was a johnny come lately to a flag that was a johnny come lately to the flag that we had had since our country was born.

So if you are so against incumbent flags being replaced.. you should hate the current flag.. as it replaced an incumbent.

I am sorry if you think me taking your post at its word and pointing out that it was full of shite makes me look superior.

Pedantic? Sheesh... you based your post around the fact you thought it was our first flag!

No referendums were not held for the first 2. The current one was chosen by a designer in Aus. The govt of the day asked him to design a flag.. he went ok... he designed one.... got paid..... the NZ govt went.. alright... then a few years later the Aussies basically copied it byt using the same designer...

I think if Key just outsourced the flag to a designer in Aus and then rubber stamped it... the electorate would have a hissy fit,

But changing the people selecting to qualified people would make a big difference

Its like selecting AB coaches who have never coached a rugby team except maybe a school side for a few weeks when no one knows how the side got on in terms of outcome. Only a fool would do this and yet that's what Key's and Co seem to have done with this flag selection process. With a fairly predictable outcome.

Is this correct?

I think it is based on the final 4 selected (they are poor). And if it is my analogy is a good one. Its like picking a unqualified selection of NZers to pick the AB's. Most who don't know the first thing about rugby but did well at law or farming or an field that has no relevance at all to sport or rugby.

The lack of any actual designer or graphic artist on the flag panel is annoying in a bang-your-head-on-the-wall sort of way.
