Result of today's game:
Blues U18 20 - 10 Hurricanes U18
Coping with underfoot conditions reminiscent of Test Match Rugby at Murrayfield and a high-penalty count, proved too challenging for a spirited Hurricanes Under 18 team, who were defeated by the Blues Under 18 side by 20 points to 10, at Owen Delaney Park in Taupo today. In a stop-start game played in windy and chilly conditions, the Blues took a 10 point to 3 lead into the half-time break. After 65 minutes the teams were locked at 10 all, but in the last 10 minutes the Blues scored a converted try and a penalty-kick (on the full-time whistle) to win the match. For the Hurricanes, Treyah Kingi-Taukamo (St. Kentigern's College) kicked a penalty and conversion, with the team's solitary try scored by full-back, Rodderick Solo (Scots College). -

Future stars on show at Hurricanes tourney
The Oval and the Rectory are the places to be from Monday for the Hurricanes Youth Rugby Council under-16 tournament. Division A teams will compete for the Don Broughton Shield; Division B, featuring Poverty Bay and East Coast, the Saracens Cup. The Bay, led by Anaru Paenga-Morgan, will have a Pool 2 game against Horowhenua-Kapiti on Oval No.2 at 12.30pm, Monday, followed by a non-competition game versus Wanganui at the Rectory at 11am on Tuesday. There is a skills day for all teams on Wednesday and finals are on Thursday. In Pool 1 of Division B, the Hewa Ruha-led East Coast play Wanganui on Oval No2 at 2pm on Monday, then Wellington Development on Oval No.2 at 11am on Tuesday. “It’s fantastic to host an event like this. The rugby at this level is pure; many of the stars come through,” said Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union chief executive officer Josh Willoughby. “This is the first opportunity for players to be seen by regional and national selectors under Hurricanes recruitment and development manager Darren Larsen. Wellington wins Hurricanes U16 Tournament
The Wellington Rugby Football Union won all three trophies on Finals Day at the Hurricanes Under 16 Tournament which concluded at the Oval, in Gisborne earlier today. In the battle for the Don Broughton Shield, Wellington took an early 14 point lead before Hawkes Bay swept back, scoring 12 points. Just before half-time, Wellington received a Yellow Card enabling Hawkes Bay to score a converted try and take the lead into the second-half, 19-14. In the second spell, Wellington briefly locked-up the scores before Hawkes Bay scored again and Wellington answered with a penalty. A penalty kicked by Hawkes Bay took the lead of the defending champions to 27-22, however a late Yellow Card enabled Wellington to strike back with converted try to win the match, 29 points to 27. In the Division B Saracens Cup Final, Poverty Bay, who had not won the Cup since 2014, struck first, before Wellington Development scored twice, taking a 12 points to 5 lead into the half-time break. Both teams were unbeaten leading into the match, but Wellington Development leapt out to a 30 points to 5 advantage, before Poverty Bay scored a consolation converted try at the end of the match, with the final score 30 points to 12. In the Division A Consolation Final, Manawatu edged Wairarapa-Bush 36 points to 31 for Third Place overall, while in Division B, Hawkes Bay Development were too strong for Wanganui, taking Third Place with a 23 points to 5 victory. In the final match played today, Horowhenua-Kapiti registered a 69 points to nil win over Ngati Porou East Coast. For the first time since it was donated by Poverty Bay in 2010, Wellington RFU won the Manaaki Tangata Trophy, for exhibiting the best team culture and spirit at the 2019 Tournament.Hurricanes U16 Tournament team:

TOBY SMITH RETIRING FROM RUGBY
Hurricanes prop Toby Smith has announced he is retiring from rugby following issues with concussion. 31-year-old Smith, a Super Rugby centurion and former Australian international, has opted not to renew his contract with the Hurricanes to preserve his long-term health by seeking out new opportunities. “I am making the difficult choice now to leave the game I love and that has given me so many amazing experiences and where I have made some life-long friendships. I have had some on-going issues with concussion, and while I am currently symptom-free, I do not wish to put that at further risk. ...
