Hansen’s assessment of the Blues:

"They've got a pretty good roster, two All Blacks front-rowers, an All Blacks lock, an All Blacks loose forward, another young player (Tom Robinson) who would have been close to being in this squad if he hadn't hurt his knee. They've got Akira [Ioane] who's pretty close to being in this squad as well, and Blake Gibson is a fantastic player too.

"Their forward pack has plenty of talent, and you could say the same about their backline. They've got a very good coach in Leon [MacDonald], and I believe, given a bit of time, you'll start to see progress.

"Having a 10 to drive those people around the park is going to make it a little more interesting. They'll make greater progress at a greater rate than they without an experienced 10 who can drive the bus, so to speak."

The quality of this signing will depend largely on when Barrett returns in 2020 and how much Rugby he plays for the duration of this contract. If he stays fit and plays plenty of Rugby for the Blues, it should be an excellent signing. But if he is largely absent over the next couple of seasons then it could be a disaster as the Blues will still be relying on a young no.10 to be successful, and this player will have a hard task because they will know that they are only keeping Beauden Barrett's seat warm.

He's been pretty lucky with injuries most of his career, but it would be typical for the Blues of he got injured in his first game and needed a knee reconstruction or something.

Hoping Stephen Perofeta is fit at the top of the season or should I say is still contracted to the Blues..after watching Otere Black run around for the NZ Māori it only confirmed to me what I always thought of Black no more than a top end Mitre 10 Cup player..and I can’t help think he was an understudy to Barrett at the Canes for a reason , hard to believe he was even in the ABs conversation when D-Mac was injured earlier in the super rugby season ..
Personally I would cut him from the Blues.
One thing Perofeta has got going for him, he does play fullback

Barrett’s coming to the Blues still masks over the fact they have not addressed the halfback issue..the 3 they have all have a tradesman look about them and will need to vastly improve..I have no doubt the selection of Finlay Christie is Leon McDonald selection so there’s obviously some he’s see’s in Christie’s game that both Nock and Ruru don’t have..
Don’t get me wrong,I am rapt with Barrett’s signing, but your only as good as the 9s you have calling the shots.

Can’t believe someone like Jack Stratton gets overlooked as a halfback ..

Doing a quick search Jonathan Taumateine is off-contract with the Chiefs so Gatland will be looking for another halfback too.

@Stargazer according to Wikipedia signings for the Blues 2020, at halfback are Christie,Nock & Ruru are all signed along with Stephen Perofeta.
I think someone like Stratton would be a very good pick up for the Canes.

@Tim you would hope the Blues are future proofing some over their young talent moving forward..I would hope that he’s contracted in the same way say for example Hoskins Sotutu and Caleb Clark were..hearing a few whispers that SBW might be sticking around for another season..he’s quite settled in Auckland at the minute.

@Steven-Harris Stratton was in the 2018 Crusaders squad as injury cover for Enari (and IIRC in the 2017 Crusaders WTG). He played only one game (14 minutes). You'd think if they thought he was good enough, he would have gotten more game time, like the Saders always do with their 3rd stringers, instead of letting Hall and Drummond play 18 and 19 games, respectively?

I'm not sure Stratton has already proven that he's up to SR level.

Seriously though, it depends on whether there's a better signing available, and what value his off field leadership has.

@Stargazer Stratton was Smith's injury replacement at the Highlanders this year. Coaches have different opinions on players (I don't rate Drummond that highly ) but he (Stratton) played very well against the Lions for the Provincial Barbarians. Just needs a chance.
