My gut feeling is that the AFL's intentions in having these officers present is good, but that they might be a bit extreme in their officiating. It may have stemmed from the recent Adam Goodes documentary where the AFL have been painted in a pretty bad light on their dealings with racial abuse and so there is going to be a clamp down to rightly remove that element from the crowd. A lot of comment from crowds directed toward umpires is generally less offensive and humourous and I am not aware of any umpires complaining yet.

Why did you implement this policy M4L? Fuck's sake man, answer for yourself.

But seriously, while the AFL haven't covered themselves in glory here, the media have reacted as if they've sent in the Gestapo to bash up old footy-loving grannies.

This type of security is nothing that new, it just seems there is a few more of them. Considering there have been a few pretty nasty fights at AFL games so far, you could certainly make a case that it's a good idea.

The problem is the AFL (or the operators of the stadium) haven't made that case, and now people feel like they are being watched all the time.

All the AFL needed to do was to say 'we want to help stop fights and horrible behaviour, but as long as you don't call the umpire a C or racially abuse Majak Daw you won't be affected'.

Instead they didn't tell anyone and all hell has broken loose.

well, you know, early in the season, we had a bunch of assaults at the footy, and people claimed something had to be done. The game has this culture where it of perfectly okay to just sit there and abuse the shit out of umpires, and any player unlucky enough to mark close tot he boundary, or you know, score a running goal.

People wanted something done, so the AFL did this. And now people are up in arms about it. Because they can't call the umpire a fluffybunny without getting kicked out.

It appears the AFL have taken it too far, and there has been a distinct lack of communication about what these guys are doing, and what the limits are. But the AFL had to do something, because people cannot control themselves.

    Who are these people?

    Collingwood fans mainly.

No, you answer my questions first. Who are these people? Crowd numbers do not suggest actual fans have been put off attending games, quite the opposite in fact.

A quick Google yields this: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-crowd-violence-keeping-kids-and-families-away-says-fans-boss-20180602-p4zj3s.html

But I'm sure there are plenty more.

That was in June 2018 and concerned crowd violence not calling someone a bald flog. Did you actually read this article?

At any rate, the argument I was responding to is that the same people complaining about the security presence now are the same ones who were demanding something be done. I don't believe that's true at all.

Ugh, why does everything have to be so difficult? M4L talked about assaults and abuse, and said 'people wanted something done'. You then asked 'who are these people?'. And I tried to find you some.

But whatever. This could have been an interesting discussion, but let's move on.

While we are talking about AFL media hysteria, the Ben Stratton pinching reaction is getting a bit overdone as well.

He's a bit of a pest, and obviously the pinching stuff is taking the niggle a bit too far. But again from some of the media you would think he's a war criminal.

There's always plenty of pushing and shoving and general niggle that goes on off-the-ball, so this isn't a radical departure from that, IMO.

He will likely get a week off, but not much more. The foot stomp was far worse I reckon.

@barbarian there is a part of me that doesn't even really think it is a week. But it is such a bitch move, and they have to do something now that all alternatives for retribution have been removed.

I think the foot stamp is about the same level. Another bitch move. Deserves a week for all that crap. And from the club captain too.

Have to give Fantasia respect for not retaliating, and then looking past it after the game. Not sure i would have shaken his hand afterwards, i would have fed it to him for the result. And the fact i kicked 2 goals.

I think that's the perfect punishment. Smash him when he has the ball, win the game and maybe look him in the eyes as you walk past him in the handshake line.

Kudos to him for leaving it on the field.

If you're going to pinch a player repeatedly then you deserve a suspension. What kind of a man pinches another man? Poofter. If you can't retaliate then suspension is surely on the only option.

10 weeks for betting on games you're involved in? Can't work out if that's light or right.

    Haha.

Went to the game. Took ACT Jnr to his first footy game. Left at 3/4 time...
