@Chris Arggghhhhh, don't mention Philpott to a Magpies supporter on the Fern. That name is still giving us nightmares! And Philpott is also the one who left McClutchie out of the NZU20 squad for the JWC this year!
Some solid @Nepia bait there, he'll be along shortly to defend Philpott.

So Scrafton has signed for the Canes according to JK on the Breakdown. Good to see we are signing bigger guys for next year - just need to re-sign IWL.

@Machpants From what I've seen against the Canes and last week against the Chiefs he looked solid. I think he was probably one of the best for the Blues last week so they will be annoyed at seeing him go. Good to see we are looking outside our catchment area, now we just need to get a couple more experienced props and we will have a good foundation for next year.

Dane Coles and Gareth Evans both playing club rugby in Wellington this week.
-
@Canes4life Great news, although I must admit that it's a bit disappointing that Evans plays club rugby in Wellington instead of Havelock North.
-
They are probably lining him up for the South Africa trip so he will have to be in Wellington so he can fly out with the Canes on Sunday.
-
@Canes4life Yeah, that makes sense!

Maybe I’ve been out of the loop for too long. I try to keep up with the new names etc but I am finding it hard to watch the canes this season. The WC year has meant anything but consistent selection and I understand the perceived need for that. But most of the games have looked like preseason games. Fuck all crowd. So bugger all atmosphere. Not a lot of top draw play and as good as the Jags have been this year there was no fucken way we should have lost to that team.
I dunno may six years in the bogan Mecca that is the Gold Coast I’m just too far removed. Honestly I think they just look shit. But so do all the other NZ teams, Crusaders aside. And I don’t think my living in OZ means I’ve suddenly developed a dislike of NZ rugby...

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree has named a 27-man squad to tour South Africa for their Investec Super Rugby matches against the Sharks and Lions. The squad features the return of club captain Dane Coles and experienced loose forward Gareth Evans who have been sidelined with calf injuries. Coles last featured for the Hurricanes in their round five match against the Chiefs while Evans has not played since the round two match against the Crusaders. The pair played club rugby in Wellington yesterday and satisfied Plumtree that they were ready to make the two-match tour. "We have been patient with both players through their rehab and we think that is really going to benefit us at the back of of this season," he said. The touring squad features a 16-forward, 11-back split and also sees the return of first five-eighth Beauden Barrett who missed the Hurricanes loss to the Jaguares due to the second of his All Black rest weeks. The Hurricanes returned to work on Friday following the second of their byes and Plumtree was pleased with the attitude as they prepare to travel to the republic. "We were obviously disappointed with the result against the Jaguares after what had been a good four week period for us," he said. "The next two matches are vital for us in South Africa as we push for a home quarterfinal but we know the size of the challenge against two quality sides who are also fighting really hard for places at the top of their conference."

That’s a much better excuse for not watching Rugby than I have

Some injury updates:
- Fidow isn't playing atm due to fitness related issues from his shoulder injury.
- Ben May had minor surgery on his knee but should be okay for the playoffs.
- Fraser Armstrong has a minor back complaint.
- Coles is still having trouble with the calf, so much so the Canes made him get a scan on his back.
- Chase Tiatia has a hamstring injury.
Shame about Fidow. Potentially the dynamic prop that the Canes need. Like The Tongan Bear - a big part of the Canes winning squad - but also injury prone. Coles. It looks like time has caught up with him. Hope not though
