The question I'm pondering (if the round robin ended today) and if the following quarter finals occured based on the fixtures below- is who would play the Crusaders in the Semi final (if the Brumbies and Sharks both lose their Quarters) and who would host the other Semi? I'm pretty sure if it's still the same logic from last year then the Crusaders would host the Hurricanes in Semi final 1 and the Bulls would host the Rebels in Semi final 2. Can someone clear this up?
For example
Quarters- Crusaders vs 8. Jaguares
- Brumbies vs 7. Bulls
- Sharks vs 6. Rebels
- Hurricanes vs 5. Highlanders
Semis:
- Crusaders vs Hurricanes
- Bulls vs Rebels
In other words the winner of Quarter 1 will always play the winner of Quarter 4, which if true is bullshit in my eyes. From this example it wouldn't be fair for the Bulls to host a Semi when they finished below the Canes during the round robin- but I'm pretty sure that's how it will roll.

@Canes4life I'm pretty sure that's almost the way it is done, but each game is sorted home team higher on ladder. So it would be Rebels (6) v Bulls (7).
So yeah Canes will shafted by the conference system third year running
The reason? Cos it is either impossible and/or prohibitively expensive to pre-book tickets to cover all eventualities. It used to be at the end of the quarters they'd be ranked according to ladder and then highest ladder remaining plays lowest ladder remaining, and 2nd highest v 3rd highest. Now its winner of 1 plays winner of 4 at top seeds home turf

@Machpants so it's almost better for us to drop back to 7th and then aim to beat the team in 2nd spot away, so we then get a home semi. What a crock of s#$t.
-
@Canes4life Really we'd still have to beat the Saders in Chch, so it's just in the semi's not finals!
-
@Machpants that isn't the point. Based on our domination of every team other than the Crusaders for the last few seasons, we again miss out on the financial benefits of hosting a semi-final based on some flawed rule around logistical expenses. Plus wouldn't you rather see two teams that deserve to be in the final, actually play in the final. Super Rugby finals is a joke and I'm afraid the reputation of this competition may never recover based on the decisions made by those tw%ts at SANZAAR.
-
@Canes4life considering the crusaders lost money hosting the finals last year, I'm not so sure! It's not ideal but the conference system is such a fuck up, is moot. Bring on the full round robin

@sparky still won't change anything. That will mean the Jaguares go into the Semis as top dogs based on the fact they won Q1.
No it won't, they'd play winner of canes or Highlanders winner in NZ
-
@Canes4life It would mean that the Canes won't have to beat the Crusaders because the Crusaders would be out of the competition.
-
Example
QuartersCrusaders vs 8. Jaguares
Brumbies vs 7. Bulls
Sharks vs 6. Rebels
Hurricanes vs 5. Highlanders
Semis:Hurricanes Vs jaguars - winner qf1 Vs qf4 at highest ladders ground
Brumbies Vs sharks - winner qf2 Vs qf3 at highest ladders groundPrevious to last year it would've been
Brumbies Vs jaguars - highest ladder Vs lowest ladder
Sharks Vs canes - 2nd highest ladders Vs 3rd highest ladder -
@Machpants no they would host the semi-final in Argie wouldn't they?
-
@Canes4life no winner of qf1 plays winner of qf4 at highest ladders home ground
-
@Machpants right, so the only chance of us hosting a Semi is if the Saders lose?
-
You can see the reasoning with the jags, in the new system they book tickets for both canes and Highlanders. Previous system they'd have to book tickets to Those placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th quarter finalist, cos if they won that's where they could possibly play next

Yeah they changed that a couple of years back and all the teams agreed because of the logistical ease.
