Plumtree said Vince Aso's shoulder injury could see him out for multiple weeks, giving him concern about his depth in the backline.

Is the South African lock bust and broken already?

Yes, his absence from the team to play the Chiefs is a bit odd considering the trouble they have gone to get him from overseas.

He was available for selection against the Highlanders last weekend, so he's not been picked now for the first two matches he could have played in.

@Higgins @Number-10 I heard a comment from Holland the other day saying they didn't want to rush the big man and wanted to get him comfortable with the game plan and environment before chucking him in.

I'm thinking he will start next week against his fellow countryman (Stormers), who knows though, Plumtree seems to have a hard on for the shortest lock to ever embrace Super Rugby.

So I guess he turned up, and was a total twat, so he was sent home

EDIT: Oh read it, he's injured - these things happen. Not stupidity, just bad luck.

Still no mention of G Cridge. That guy is picking up cheques for free.

It still baffles me that Plumtree has a 122kg, 198m lock (Isaia WL) sitting right there in front of him and yet he is persistent on picking two guys that probably prefer the blindside.

@Canes4life Cridge has been training his socks off. He's not picking up cheques for free. When fit, the Canes could have given him opportunities. They chose not to do so. It's a story that keeps on repeating itself at the Canes.

@Stargazer is he made of glass then? He's been injured for most of the period he has been in the Canes hasn't he.

I do agree with you, Plumtree had plenty of opportunity at the start of this campaign to give him a run and he didn't. I just don't see why. This guy just loves playing guys out of position.

He was permanently injured for a couple of years. It was weird, the Canes gave contracts to two young HB players who were both injured (Cridge and Renton) while overlooking players who were performing in a Magpies jumper.

Similar with what they have done with Devan Flanders, though I see more talent in him than I saw with Renton. Just hope he doesn't pave the same path.

@Canes4life One positive sign is maybe that they named him captain of the Canes U20s squad a couple of times. Maybe I'm clutching at straws.

@Stargazer that is correct. To be fair he has future Canes captain written all over him, just hope he lives up to the hype.

He probably will, just for the Chiefs.

On Renton, we used to make fun of him but when he actually got on the pitch he was actually pretty decent. Then the Canes booted him as soon as he became uninjured and that journeyman from the Crusaders turned up.

    Re-sigend by the Hurricanes:

    0f83f035-75c0-4974-9a80-8bc416c2baa4-image.png

    .

The Hurricanes have positioned themselves well for the future by signing five of their most promising players for at least the next two seasons.

Promising prop Xavier Numia (20), openside flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi (22), and lock James Blackwell (23), have signed with the club until the end of the 2021 season.

Utility back Vince Aso (24), who first joined the Hurricanes in 2015 and is closing in on 50 matches for the club, and second year prop Alex Fidow (21), have signed until the end of the 2022 season.

Hurricanes general manager of rugby Ben Castle believed the collective signing of the group would greatly benefit the players and the club.

"These players are talented young men with big futures who have been part of the Hurricanes family for some time now. We are very pleased to have them with us for the next few seasons at least." he said.

"They are all very motivated individuals who have a strong desire to see the Hurricanes succeed."

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree was looking forward to the opportunity to continue to work with the players over the next few seasons.

"While our focus is very much on 2019 and getting the job done now, we still have to look closely at the future and locking in this group of players allows us to do that," he said.

"All of the players we have signed are already contributing a lot to the squad's performance but the coaching group really believe they can continue to get better and that is something they all want to do."

Ross Geldenhuys? Surprised to see that name; didn't know he was still in the country.
I had to look up Veikoso Poloniati. Apparently he played for South Canterbury last year.
    They're still looking for a fullback ...
No first five-eighth on the bench.

    No Flanders or McClutchie. 🤔
Can't be because of NZ U20s, because Toala and Kereru-Symes did make the squad.

@Stargazer Pretty good loose trio there though. Good to see Mark Telea getting a run. Who is he injury cover for?
