LOCK ANDRIES FERREIRA JOINS HURRICANES
Experienced South African lock Andries Ferreira has joined the Hurricanes squad for the remainder of the Investec Super Rugby season. The 28-year-old arrived in Wellington on Saturday and joined the squad on Sunday for his first training run. Ferreira replaces Sam Lousi who has suffered a season ending pectoral muscle injury which required surgery. He comes to the Hurricanes having played for the Cheetahs and Lions in Super Rugby while he also had a brief stint in the French Top 14 with Toulon as injury cover. Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree said he was delighted Ferreira had taken up the invitation to join the squad. "I've got a lot of respect for the way Andries plays and approaches the game and we believe he is going to be a great asset to the squad," he said. "We have been really happy with the work of our young guys in the first three games and we think Andries will bring some real experience and help develop the guys around him. "It's really bad luck for Sam who is a really important member of our squad and we are grateful he is still around to contribute off the field." Plumtree confirmed Ferreira would be available for selection for Friday night's match against the Highlanders at Westpac Stadium. -
The Canes showed on Friday that they will be a handful if they can get ascendency and good front foot ball - this signing will hopefully ensure that continues. I also hope he comes in for Blackwell as I like the look of young Mitchell, even though he is green as they get.

@Canes4life It's a pity he isn't a bit taller. Only 1.97m. His experience will make a difference though, although I can't quite remember how good he was for the Lions or Cheetahs.

@Stargazer That is larger than Blackwell at 1.90m though. I watched a few highlights of him when the first announcement was made and he looked fairly slow but did the basics well, won his lineouts, cleared at ruck time and carried strongly. He won't be scoring 50m tries like Sam Whitelock though, unfortunately. Actually thinking of it, he is probably a similar player to Blackwell, if Blackwell was 120kg and 7cms taller.

There's two locks playing in the development team who are larger that Blackwell, one is three year Cane who played for NZ U20s for two years and the other was one of the better locks in last years NPC.
The NZ Super rugby system is broken if we're bringing in Saffa journeyman and denying opportunities for home players.
@jegga The Canes really make it easy to keep me off the bandwagon.

@Nepia I agree with you on this one. Guys like Cridge & Walker-Leawere who were exceptional in the ITM are only going to learn and improve at the next level by playing. They both have massive potential and could put their hands up for national selection post World Cup, however, bringing in a guy like Ferreira could now stunt their development due to him absorbing their minutes. On the other hand they could also learn alot from the big fella aswell.
Isn't Cridge injured again now anyway?

Plumtree said Vince Aso's shoulder injury could see him out for multiple weeks, giving him concern about his depth in the backline.

Yes, his absence from the team to play the Chiefs is a bit odd considering the trouble they have gone to get him from overseas.
He was available for selection against the Highlanders last weekend, so he's not been picked now for the first two matches he could have played in.

@Higgins @Number-10 I heard a comment from Holland the other day saying they didn't want to rush the big man and wanted to get him comfortable with the game plan and environment before chucking him in.
I'm thinking he will start next week against his fellow countryman (Stormers), who knows though, Plumtree seems to have a hard on for the shortest lock to ever embrace Super Rugby.

Still no mention of G Cridge. That guy is picking up cheques for free.
It still baffles me that Plumtree has a 122kg, 198m lock (Isaia WL) sitting right there in front of him and yet he is persistent on picking two guys that probably prefer the blindside.

@Canes4life Cridge has been training his socks off. He's not picking up cheques for free. When fit, the Canes could have given him opportunities. They chose not to do so. It's a story that keeps on repeating itself at the Canes.

I do agree with you, Plumtree had plenty of opportunity at the start of this campaign to give him a run and he didn't. I just don't see why. This guy just loves playing guys out of position.

He was permanently injured for a couple of years. It was weird, the Canes gave contracts to two young HB players who were both injured (Cridge and Renton) while overlooking players who were performing in a Magpies jumper.

Similar with what they have done with Devan Flanders, though I see more talent in him than I saw with Renton. Just hope he doesn't pave the same path.
