Anyone swim?

Have locked in a date for my lake swim with a couple of mates, straight across lake Brunner (8-9km) on the 28th December.
So accordingly had the last big pool session on Saturday..... 6.5 km all up, main part of the set was 40 x 100m intervals, by far the toughest set I’ve ever done in a pool. (260 lengths for those who care)

Out of curiosity (maybe you can't answer this yet if first big swim) is it easier to swim 'straight line' or to have to turn 260 times? I imagine there is push off that would help but that removes constant rythm?

It’s hard to answer, pool swimming there’s a lot more focus on time per length, per 100m, per 200 etc. I’d never just jump in the pool and swim 260 lengths in a row, it’s just not as productive.
As the lake swim isn’t a race, it’s at a consistent cruising pace for a few hours.
Short answer, both are pretty hard

Lake swim was done on 28th December, final distance was a little over 9km. Took us 3hours 10minutes.
Couldn’t have asked for a better day, and handled it pretty well, the training we did was more than enough. (I’d post up photos if I could work out how).
Now to keep working towards the end goal of cook strait in a couple of years time.

Honestly, with the struggles i am having in the pool, i am in awe of what you just did, and what you plan to do. Swimming is fucking hard.

This is actually based on a Swedish film I saw years ago! Rob Brydon is awesome.

@Rancid-Schnitzel I agree, this looks funny as

Hahaha wow, that's awesome. I didn't even use the pool this summer. Not joking.

Back into the swimming lately in a good way.
Got a few goals I want to tick off before hitting 40, the main one being a sub 1.05 100 metre freestyle.
This weeks programmme:
Mon: 3km
Tues: 3.5km
Wed: 3.5km
Thurs: 2km (morning) 3km (evening)
Friday: 2kmSat and Sunday to be determined after a long run and club champs for tennis.

this is awesome. I can swim quickly when swim-fit, but those distances are excellent. Good luck on your goal.
One important point I want to add is that doing lots (as in 500m or more 2-3 times a week) of kick training with a board (at a fast pace , not slow) really helps to lift and streamline the form through the water. You know the point where you can just power along the top of the water as fast as most swimmers. That will help your 100m target.
I'll go for a swim in the next week or two and get my 50m current time (completely untrained).
It'd be interesting to hear from others, too. -

Nobody likes doing kick (we’d all prefer to swim the lazy way with a pull buoy and paddles), but it’s a pretty effective way to improve speed.

Our boy has started swimming lessons, with Mum or Dad, but right now I can’t swim with him as I have a small -very tasteful- tattoo on my right shoulder (fucking Japan). As a result, I have to either tape my arm or use a big plaster (which usually comes off, so is out) or buy a swim suit that covers the top of my arms.
So, since many here have a bit of experience with this, is there swimwear like that for guys? I assume so, therefore are there any good brands to go for? Things to avoid? I doubt I’ll start swimming heaps, but if I have to invest I’d rather spend money on something I could use if I end up swimming more.
