Kobe is where Wayne Smith and Dan Carter are. Given how much the Black Jersey means to those two gentlemen, I doubt they'd let Brodie return to NZ broken and fat.

Huh? All I did was mention he's going to Japan.

For a guy who wasn't able to hold down a starting spot in the test team the column inches and media circus got a bit much.

When he first made the ABs he had the best partnership we've ever had (sorry Frank and Walter) ahead of him and since they've been gone he's started every test he hasn't been injured for.

I missed out 'ahead of him'. Fixed it now with an edit.

Oi Peanus!!! His post read before he made the edit that SBW made the best centre pairing when he came into the ab's. I was merely pointing out that actually Nonu and Smith were the best.

@Bones if he stars in an All Blacks RWC campaign leading to a three peat this year I can handle that!

Hopefully it is for the single year only, taking advantage of the double season in Japan following the RWC.

Barrett was stuck behind Carter too wasn't he?

The reason why SBW's AB legacy isn't more impressive isn't because of his post 2015 efforts. It's because he faffed around with Toulon, NRL and Japan in 2010, 2012 and 2014 playing 4, 5 and 4 tests respectively. Nonu and Smith gave plenty of opportunities during 2012-15 both taking sabbaticals and having injuries.

His only full seasons were 2011 and 2015 which are padded with C-tier nations in pool play, RWC warm games and the most forgettable TRC fixtures of the cycle... and 2017 which was hardly a career year.

If it weren't for the 2017 Lions Series the history of the All Blacks could comfortably be written without a mention of SBW.

@rotated I was only responding to your claim he couldn't hold down a starting spot, which he clearly did when Nonu and Smith finished ... whenever he wasn't injured.

Best three games I can remember SBW having in Black were the 2010 game Vs Scotland, the 2012 Ireland game in Hamilton and then 2015 RWC final off the bench. He was outstanding on all three occasions.

Why did he not hit those heights more often? Why was he still picked so much in 2017 and 2018 when his level of performance had dropped off so much? Why have the All Blacks coaching set team tolerated the circus around SBW when most players are given much less leeway?

Can't blame him really. Has seen first hand how shit luck can destroy opportunities.
Would have made a nice addition to the ABs to see how he would have gone as a loose forward bench impact. Certainly brings go-forward to the game.
AFAIK he still qualifies for Samoa (has played U20s for both NZ and Samoa, born in NZ, selected for ABs but never took the field). He might just keep that option open.

SBW is one of, if not the most, physically gifted players I have ever seen in either rugby code. By all reports he is an absolute model pro off the field.

It's a bit shit his NZ rugby time has been limited by injuries (and Ma'a) but what we have seen has been something no one else could provide.

But for all the press, good and bad, where ever he has played I have watched, and loved. He is professional football personified.

Good luck to him and I hope he has a massive 2019

Apart from those that provided it of course.

@taniwharugby 8 years in the ABs is nothing to be sneezed at.

A single cap off the bench in the 78th minute in black is nothing to sneeze at.

For a guy who wasn't able to hold down a starting spot in the test team the column inches and media circus got a bit much. When all of that is stripped away he has had the Super/Test career of Liam Messam, with a good offload in a RWC final and the record for most cards in AB history.

It's a pity that his code-and-continent-hopping tendencies didn't kick in a season or two earlier (around the same age they do for tenured All Blacks) because he has offered buckleys for anyone other than the journalists this cycle.

Got any stats to back up that claim?

Edit: I can't find any lists but clicking through all of SBWs games he has 1 Red and 3 Yellows so the claim above could be correct. I am guessing a reasonable list of 2 YCs and possibly a few with 3 YCs (Kaino? Read?)
Edit:2 thanks @Bones for finding the list below.
