Did Boult have somewhere else to be today? That's quite the spell.

Lankan tailenders weren't sure what the wooden thing they were holding was for, so decided to wave it around their shoulders while sticking their legs in front of that cute wood stack thingy to stop the ball hitting it.

    Some godawful leaves for lbw.

Good start by the openers. I know that Raval will probably get out shortly after lunch, but even so, they've done a great job taking the shine off the new ball and taking the edge off the opening bowlers.

Great stuff by Jeet and Tom to bat through the middle session to get us to 117/0 with a lead of 191. Jeet 72. Tom 40

Now, we’re all sure to thinking the same thing about one of these chaps and the position he is in, but no one mention it... please.

An outstanding performance from the Black Caps so far today. 118-0, 192 runs ahead.

Most consistent cricketer I've ever seen if that makes sense. His run of 'decent' scores with few shit scores and no massive scores is pretty weird.

Weird alright. But good weird. The big score will come, no doubt about it.
As a NZ opening batsmen he is exactly what we’ve been needing since Rigor gave it away.

I'll take a century opening stand everytime even if it means Raval doesn't move on to 100 himself. These two openers are not such that one will dominate the scoring to an extent the other doesn't get a decent start and neother will score so fast as to obviate the blunting of the new ball

Yeah his career trajectory is pretty fucken odd.

    I mean, what benefits a team more.....scores of 40, 40, 30, 30 or 70, 0, 70, 0 or 140, 0, 0, 0 ?

    Crickets a funny game....

For an opener I'd take 40 every go. Especially when he takes about 80 to 100 balls to do it

@SynicBast I wonder if Kane is as surprised as me, when he gets out! 🙂

Raval had had a pretty lean trot in the past 12 months - after the first innings he was averaging 18 in that period - got that up to 23 now - but, he might have needed a score.

Hamish Rutherford has been having a decent time with the bat and might have been starting to put a bit of pressure on.

NZ end the day on 231/2. Jeet out for 74, Kane out for 48. Latham on 74, Taylor on 25. Lead is 305.

Not sure what can happen on Day 3 to top the antics of Day 2.

Hamish Rutherford isn't a test opener - he's never been able to demonstrate consistency as an opener, for all Jeet doesn't get humongous scores he is doing the primary job as an opener - weathering the new ball and getting some runs

@SynicBast For the first year of his test career Jeet certainly did.

For the second year he didn't.

Don't think he's in danger. I'm comfortable with what he's producing. He's not Bradman but averaging mid 30s is pretty dependable for a NZ opener.

WRT Rutherford what has his form been like? Is it that compelling?
