    Great start with a wicket in Boult's first over. Southee is a very good slip fielder.

    Fuck we loves Boulter!

    About aa much as we loves Wags. And he's not playing.

    Good hand with the bat by Somerville.

    That top order Raval/Taylor/Nicholls collapse could easily cost us the series. Another hundred runs from those guys and we'd be in a commanding position.

    Given the way the Windies have slumped in world cricket - especially, in my view, as technology, facilities and basically money have talked louder over the past 30 years - Pakistan has done very well to remain a competitive force.

    There's always room for Wagner, he is all guts. He will tear himself up trying to get wickets for the team

    look, i get it, we all love a battler, but Southee over Wagner in the 3rd test of a series played on dead pitches does kind of make sense.

    (i would have played him over Colin).

    CDG will probably play a star hand now you said that but I agree. Wagner over Colin. When things are stagnant you need a guy who can stir things up

    Did anyone watch much of the last 2 sessions?

    I saw Somerville's first 2 overs and called it a night. There was some turn there. Looking at the scorecard both spinners were economical but did they look like getting any wickets?

    Nope. Patel didn't look as menacing as the first game. Sommerville gets it through too fast, not enough flight and doesn't rip it as much as the Pakisatanis do

    That's probably part of the reason they rested him. Big home summer of cricket coming up so they'll want him firing on all cylinders for that.

    Personally I'd prefer we really pushed for the away series win, though replacing him with Southee doesn't exactly weaken us.

    @bovidae pretty spot on. Both spinners use flight to get above the batsmans eyes but these sub continent players are weined on such spinners and pitches. New guy looked pretty ok ( now there's praise!) but without racking up heaps of maidens it's basically waiting on batsmen errors.

    Only Sri Lanka have won a series in UAE and only SA, India and us have drawn there. Without a top spinner It's nye on impossible to beat Pakistan at "home" these days .

    Oh to set them 200 odd in the 4th innings, Pakis hate chasing. But that'll take some change in fortunes or pitch

    Assuming we can get them out evens or close the 3rd innings will be crucial

    If we don't start taking some wickets in this innings, Pakistan might not need to bat again.

    @canefan there was a bit of talk prior to his selection that Sommerville would need to bowl faster on these pitches, so I think that's part of the game plan. He's bit luckier with his height that getting in into eye-line is a bit easier as part of his normal deliveries. I think both of their spinners get more wrist rip/action compared to our finger spinners - problem is the former are both pretty accurate too!

    Yeah, but a couple of early wickets will see Pakistan way behind the 8-ball given they have to bat last. That's the benefit of batting first. It's in the balance right now but I'd rather be in our shoes than theirs.

    @no-quarter

    The first hour will be huge as Boult and Southee look the most likely to get wickets in bunches.

    Nice to see Watling get more praise. Doull and Franklin were certainly talking him up.

    @bovidae

    He used to open the batting didn't he? BJ and Rigor would have to be two of the most successful conversions we've ever had
