@mariner4life all put in perspective when winning 3Ns and Bledisloe in 2003. When it actually meant something.
π
indeed. when we got a new team and a new plan. 2002 was deleted like a bad selfie. We just didn't go far enough in the end, more cantabores needed to be rissoled.
Was Wayne Smith in charge in 2002? Or did Bitchell take over then? All I can recall is him trying to lecture Cullen on the mechanics of holding and passing the ball, and trying to justify his non-selection in the 2003 cup side by saying he was not even the 4th or 5th best 15 in NZ that year. What a fucking carnt. I still haven't forgiven him for that
The worst thing he did was sending Jerry Collins out to face the media after that Oz loss. Jesus the system was broken back then - how on earth did that charlatan get the AB coach role?
In all seriousness, the big fear at the time was that NZ forward play was regressing badly and Mitchell was seen as someone with solid forward-coaching credentials, off the back of his work with England. I reckon that was a big driver and all of the other irritating details, such as a lack of head coaching experience, seemed to get swept to one side. And so began the Magical Mystery Tour .....
Oddly enough his time in charge saw us get bossed by an Oz forward pack.

How many log ins do you have Nepia?
Panadol wasn't even fit to lace Cullen's boots
Fake news. Cullen didnβt have a right or left boot....

Look, no one looks back on the Mitch era fondly, but, he did get the Bledisloe back. Higher credentialed coaches didn't do that.
And posting 50 points away back to back in the Tri-Nations when it was actually good? The mid-part of 2003 was pretty sweet.
He also brought in a few guys who went on to be pretty decent All Blacks.
Biggest indictment of Deans was McGod choosing Henry over his Super rugby coach at the time
Get over it.
How many Super titles did he win?
Brad Thorn and Dan Carter both said he was the best coach they played under.

I was wondering when the red and blacks would show up. Where the hell is Canerbry these days?

They are all too busy on their own thread giving each other reach-arounds because Ben Darwin's computer says they are the absolute besterest ever and gave them an award.

Does it show the demographic of the Fern that there is an awful of angst towards 99/03/07, with the dominant Cantabs the easy scapegoats, and yet the 90-94 period, and the Auckland guys get away scot free these days? I feel like if this forum was around in 96 there would be a few other names getting cursed.
Too long ago? Too faded from memory?

@nepia Your squeals of outrage as Cully was dropped would have been at frequencies beyond detection by the human ear!
Agreed, and I would have loved to have seen you twisting yourself in knots trying to defend the selections of the Hobbit and then that dude playing in the midfield for Auckland in the NPC over him.
His pace was gone and he needed to go.
Actually, Atiga over Cully was a sensible selection. By the time he was picked as a replacement, Cully's book was hitting the bookshelves and any remaining bridges to Mitch were completely torched.

3/4 with four finals. No shame in losing to Wayne Smith.
Where did Thorn say that? High praise indeed if true. I find it unlikely given Paul Vaultin coaches him in the 1996 origin.

I think also that he looked like a psycho. They wanted the team to toughen up and perhaps felt that a guy who looked like he belonged in a maximum security wing would be the man to do that. Smith just looked too nice.
I remember Mitchell saying something about how he wanted to have people he trusted and used the analogy of hanging over the edge of a cliff by a rope. I found that pretty farking odd at the time.

Itβs in Deans book, a direct quote where thorn says the best coaches he played under were Robbie and Wayne Bennett.
What year did Deans lose to Wayne Smith?
-
@rancid-schnitzel I think it was all just part of NZ rugby badly losing its way around the turn of the century.
We were about to lose the World Cup hosting rights and the whole tenor of NZ Rugby had changed towards corporatization.
In the spirit of @booboo - here's just about the only post I've ever saved from a messageboard...from 1999!

For the most part they were the best players available, but the fact is we lost so someone had to bear the brunt. I remember the public were baring for Hart's blood when he failed in '99. Some of them benefited from playing in the best team. Reminds me of Mark Carter
