    A more perpendicular line, but the hind most foot is a few cm left, you can see it blurry between lawes legs and 17's arm

    Yeah that line is too far forward, and he’s still in front of. The UK media is being dishonest if they think this is a controversial decision.

    @machpants you mean a few CM in the image, not on the field, which again puts 2nd in from the top offside as well...no way is the entire English defensive line half a metre behind the offside line and only Lawes on the line....the line should be well behind Lawes rear foot.

    BTW the shot was just the only one I could find quickly. It was someone else’s graphics on Twitter.

    My point wasn’t so much the actual offside line but how out of line Lawes was with the rest of his team. Either he got it wrong or they all did.

    Playing devil's advocate (naturally) was it even a ruck? No England players competed at any point.

    Either way it was a great test and was worth the wait. Can't win a game if you can't win your own lineout ball.

    @margin_walker there is an English guy on the ground, see his head under refs hand and feet to the left of Lawes leg...he looks part of it?

    Yeah, he was the tackler. No one else went in that I could see

    @margin_walker but when he tackles the player you now have a ruck with 1 each there.

    @taniwharugby

    Too late in the day to get my law book out, but I'm pretty sure that's just a tackle situation. Not a ruck. Need a defending player to actually compete for the ball in some way.

    @margin_walker well the next AB player in moments later causes it to be a ruck or if the English guy gains his feet to atack the ball, only need 2 for a ruck

    @taniwharugby

    Needs at least one player from each team over the ball competing at some point iirc.

    For a ruck yes.

    See tweets posted above by @Stargazer re offside at tackle.

    Law of unintended consequence / karma. 🙂

    @booboo when you re-watch it, was a 3 man tackle on Mounga, but one went down with him, 2 ABs quickly over the sole English player and Mounga on the ground...the English player on the ground actually creates a deeper off-side line for his players by wriggling out (he didnt look to be impeding the ball) had he not, Lawes would likely have been only marginally off with 'last mans feet' being pretty much foremost AB

    I get the English discontent though on that TMO call. The gap between Lawes being onside and offside was infinitely smaller than the gap between Perenara (and subsequent defensive efforts from Beauden) making a good play and shit play.

    Kind of like a reverse Port Elizabeth 2011 game where the difference between the pass being forward and not was smaller than the distance by which the hometown TMO broke due process.

    It is a risk referees like Garces run though. They swallow the whistle most of the game and let players push the boundaries if it does get tight in the last stanza you set yourself up for disaster. Players will be emboldened (in this case flaunting the offside line) and when a penalty is eventually called it is seen as out of character for the test.
