@nzzp Damn, didn’t even get passed the second sentence. Will have to shorten my posts. Nice one NZZP.
I agree with youa bout a 6 though. A hard hitting ball running 6 who can win lineouts - is it really that hard? Fark we miss Jerome and Jerry, they were just specimens.
After a few Shiraz, I have wondered about Cane to 6 at times. he has all the physical attributes except height. Read at 8 covers nicely, but we'd be forced to lift tall timber like Ardie at 7 if we were to make something like that work.
Scott Barrett an option in a Alan Whetton kinda way? Just musing after his last 20 mins
Lineouts, handy round the field, big moto4, some but not a vast drop off in physicality?
Possibly. We'd have to find a 3rd lock though because, for all his foibles, SB has performed pretty well in tests so far, and we defo need a handy 3rd lock for the next 12 months.

I thought the heat and the altitude got to them early on. The looked gassed at the 25 minute mark.
I don't think we need to panic yet, we were missing half our first choice forwards including the irreplaceable BBBR and it's becoming clear now that SBW and Crotty are no longer our starting midfielders. So there's a heap of improvement left.

@kiwiinmelb we won the week before v Argie. We had to fly from Argie and play at altitude. We only beat Boks by 1 last year in Cape Town. I dont think there's reason to go overboard on the worry.
But last year wasn't a target game. It was the end of season dead rubber.
Hansen specifically said that this game was a practice for two hard games at RWC. We were going to play the best team available and treat it as a RWC final. If we play like that in a RWC we won't be champions.
I too am reminded of a game we won 6-3 against Oz.
Last game against them many felt we only lost because we gifted them 14 points. Well that excuse doesn't wash in this one.
That doesn’t make sense. Look at the 2011 RWC final. We didn’t play well but ultimately did enough to win the test match. 8-7 is all that really matters.
So if last night was some sort of RWC dress rehearsal then mission accomplished because no matter how we got the win - we got it. Hold the cup up boys and do the lap of honour.

We, or some of us, think there are changes required to the thought of first choice team. But that matters little. Do the coaches think the same? Do they think that 10-12-13 has 14 months left in it? Are they still sold on our 6 options? Is naholo locked in to 14?

@mariner4life I would hope that they have identified all the problem areas that you have highlighted, otherwise we could be in trouble. I think Squire gets in by default simply because there is nobody else at this stage, but the other positions you mentioned are up for garbs.

Just watched the game. After almost 15 years on this site I should have realised that the hysterical posts and opinions here almost always have little resemblance to the actual game that is played.
Piss poor tackling and ball retention were the problem.

Soooo, no dramas then? Just make a cpuple of tackles and hold a bit of ball and it's golden? Really?

There's mention on this game being some kind of RWC dress rehearsal. That doesn't really make sense. When will the team be required to play a game in Argentina then a game at altitude one week later in South Africa?

Yes really. Or are tackles and ball retention no longer important in rugby?

To be fair, it was Shag who said that. But I agree with you, the scenarios are quite different.

I sent a mail to my family in NZ straight after the game saying, "Don't stop believing....oooh oooh" and now everyone from the AB coach to here on the forum are quoting the same thing.
Was a classic ding-dong highveld game against the traditional brutal foe. I loved it. The Blue Bulls (one of the best names in sports history...makes me laugh anyway) at their peak and the Boks of yesteryear played a type of game that can only be described as "blitzkrieg." High intensity, big buggers running straight, tactical kicks for the corners, never letting the opponents get organized etc. We saw a return to that last night. How many teams have been completely buried by a motivated SA side. Last night the ABs hung in there and eventually came out on top. Lucky but we'll take it.
Some thoughts I have been having recently. Big Karl T and Franks are too similar type players to play together. Big units who are strong at set piece and and do the core duties well. But not big carriers and can be exposed defensively by more fleet footed players. Moody+Franks or Karl T+ Ofa etc seem a better balance esp. defensively.
They need a 6 with a big defensive shoulder in the mould of Collins/Kaino with some go forward. I keep thinking maybe Cane is the answer there now with the resurrection of Ardie. Any chance of enticing Vermeulen to NZ?
Scott Barrett doesn't get the love he deserves on here. Big motor and doesn't take a step back. Good back up for the two greats we have at the moment.
ALB and Goodhue need to be played together to develop a combo. To my mind they are the future and the future is here.
Richie running the cutter, BFA and Rieko on the wings and Beauden Barrett at fullback needs to be tried as well. -

Yikes. Cane fractured a vertebrae in his neck and is going to have surgery in SA before flying home. Expected to make a full recovery, but will be out for several months.
End of Sam Cane's season. It speaks volumes for who Sam Cane is that he won a penalty for the team in the incident where one of his neck vertebrae got broken.
