Fifth, Jaco. I was complaining about him from the first 5 minutes. He didn't referee the breakdown. He left no gap in the lineout (which saw the ABs lose some throws, too, but we were less well equipped to deal with that than the ABs were). He only refereed one side at the scrum (only one side was responsible for holding the scrum up, so the other side could do whatever they wanted). Genia's dig at him at 72 minutes was perfect - "Then what are you watching?" He didn't lose us the game, but some of his decisions - or non-decisions - directly led to points to the ABs (quite a lot of them), and that scoreboard pressure helped the Wallabies lose their heads in that period between 50 and 65 minutes. -

Beauden Barrett is Simon Mannix with wheels. If he was slow, he would be an NPC player.
Controversial, but as a first five you aren't too far wrong. His anticipation in broken play is the only other elite skill he has that separates him from other international players in his position.
Unlike Mannix though he would be a world class fullback if given the opportunity.

Pretty sure the Mako tried using Kane Hames at tighthead last year vs Canterbury and he got done like a dinner and I'd rate him a stronger scrummager than Perry.
I think Canterbury used Joe Moody as a tighthead a few seasons back. Having him switch sides if necessary might be the most solid option - but, means at least one of the starting props has to go 80.

I think it was Crocky actually, and only for a few games. The Crusaders were looking light at TH the following year, but the experiment didn't work.

He was indeed pretty loose in the breakdown, for sure.

From memory he used his touch judges for scrum calls twice. As it's quite hard to referee the other side of the scrum from where you are standing.

Taking a dig at a ref is never a good idea ... let alone a perfect one.

Say what? The Wallabies lost their heads? That never happened.
The Wallabies, especially at the 50-65 minute mark were quite relentless in their defence, ruthless in going for turnovers and even scored a try during this point in time. At no point do I think they lost their heads. Given the amount of pressure the AB's put them under, they actually responded very well. Smiths try was just engrained knowledge of knowing where your man is, Goodhues a fantastic response to broken play in your own 22 when you could hardly expect the Wallabies defensive line to be spot on, Barrett's was a touch of genius on the back of scrub pressure (see Red Beards twitter here for a great shot), Naholo's first was Barrett genius and his second, tired defense.
To even suggest, even a little bit that Peyper is to blame is just absolute laziness. And despite clearly saying that you aren't .. you are with your last sentence.

And as you say the reduction in the lineout options means we can target their locks.

Just watched this morning and now had a look at some posts and social media.
Though Naholo was a tad lucky not to pick up a YC for that tackle, another ref woulda sent him.
BBBR beast...although the turnover he got that lead to his try probably shouldn't have been as he didn't give Genia a chance to release, but those kind of momentary calls are tough anyway.
That Goodhue kid went alright, except that time he took out his midfield partner...reckon they could start him and ALB next week.
Made a few dollars off him as I had some on him to score a try.
Some comments on social media was that was a shit first half, I thought it was solid, sure we made errors but Aus played well and put us under pressure and we were forced to defend a lot.

AB supporters are a a tough crowd for sure. We lacked execution in the first half, but hey it's the first TRC hit out for the year, and against a highly motivated opponent. I didn't think BB was as bad as many give him credit for, the aussies defended like demons in the first half and generally played really well without troubling our try line. We came out sharper in the second 40 and ripped them a new one. I'm reasonably satisfied

Don't be ridiculous. The Wallaby supporter I had to deal with at half time fitted that role.
We're playing to a pattern and our five-eighth did that. Our attack is reasonably predictable in the first half, but it affords us opportunities in the second stanza. The Wallabies were picking it well and committed which makes them play a certain way in defence.
One we were slightly more patient and passes stuck, we eviscerated them.
This. With those patterns and a committed rush defence any flyhalf will have difficulties creating anything. What are your options? Shift it or get hammered. But apparently certain people here expect miracles.
My criticisms would be with his kicking. His goal kicking as usual, but his kicking in general play has been pretty poor. Certainly a work on there.

@crucial have been plenty of other examples where the tacklee has contributed to the tip and the tackler ends up with a YC.

Hansen is paying what I consider lip service to Laumape but I don't think for a second that he'll do anything other than retain the combination that wound up playing most of the test last night. I said earlier in the thread that ALB at 12 with Goodhue could be our long term combination but this may just happen sooner than I thought should they continue to play like that.
