dont think anyone was disputing what was speculated, but that is pretty shit and once again shows NZR doesnt care about M10 Cup.
-
@taniwharugby Do you mean they should have found a back-up for BB in a Mitre 10 Cup team? Where do they have one available with the skills and experience of Marshall?
This signing doesn't exclude at all that Marshall will also play Mitre 10 Cup before and/or after the 2019 SR season. The media release just doesn't say anything about it, but that could be because he's still negotiating, or because it's not a "Canes province" where he's going to play, e.g. Ta$man?
-
@stargazer ah ok, so you are cool with NZR basically saying none of you other 10s out there are upto super rugby next year, so hard luck?
If he does sign in M10, then great, all a moot point, but if not, it is shit, he is not someone who has earnt the right to play off-shore and in Super rugby.

Are there any 10s in Mitre 10 Cup who are available, upto SR level and adequate as a back-up for BB? I reckon they are very hard to find.
Considering they have already signed a shit 10 from Mitre 10 Cup (JGB), who doesn't seem up to SR level as well as a young inexperienced one (TJ Va'a), who has been more injured than not, I can fully understand this signing, if only for one season, so they have more time to prepare a young one (Va'a or someone else) for the following season(s).
They failed to sign Falcon last year. Otere Black left and has signed with the Blues; Hunt with the Crusaders; Gatland with the Landers etc. I'm not sure who the Magpies back-up for Falcon is goint to be, but if it's McClutchie, he'll not be ready for SR. Not sure what the situation is in other Mitre 10 Cup teams, but good 10s are a rare species. Josh Ioane disappointed for the Highlanders last week. Te Rure is the only one I can think off, but why did he fail in Scotland?
-
@stargazer isnt that JGB & West next in line behind BB, meaning the next guy they sign is theoretically 3rd anyway, so more a development option, which is what M10 Cup is, or was seen as, the pathway to super rugby...more so that M10 Cup hasnt even kicked off and 1 less spot is taken, potentially by someone not playing M10 Cup.
-
@taniwharugby West is moving to France after this year's SR season, yes. Marshall will be 2nd, JGB will stay third and TJ Va'a (if they keep him/if he's staying) is 4th. If they hadn't signed Marshall, JGB would have become 2nd. No way, you'd want JGB as BB's back-up.

Especially in a World Cup year where there might be extended resting during the Super season.

The bigger issue with this signing is that NZR are not discouraging young players from going overseas to earn some coin if there is a good chance they'll get a SR contract if they decide to return to NZ. It does send the wrong message.
-
@stargazer it's the same point I was making, just explained differently; that IF he doesnt play M10 Cup and plays super rugby it is showing the next wave of kids that NZR rugby doesnt value M10 Cup, so another pathway is to piss off overseas.

Would be good if they picked up someone like Gear to replace Lowe...
Rico must be in his 40's by now but he probably still goes fairly well.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs look like they have midfield spot open with the idiot going to Japan and Maori Jesus walking across the water to France, so Lowe should head there.
