Even if you watch that quarterfinal performance of Savea v France it was more hype than substance.
He had two clear runs to the line for tries and if you watch his famous bump off try the Frenchie defender was so far on his heels it wasnt funny. His decline definitely started in 2015.
Try telling @Bones that. He loves Savea
I think you're probably the most astute poster on here bro.

I know right? Imagine if I actually watched Rugby?

@siam I can't imagine any professional coach being that petty.
No me neither really, just thought it might be a straw on a camel's back. But only a musing
Link McKenzie told me about the time he dropped Matt Burke from warratahs because at the first interview of the season Burke spent the first half hour talking about his mew house. Link reckoned his mind wasn't on rugby.

Beyond he and Coles and Milner-Skudder, No.8 Blade Thomson and lock Michael Fatialofa are the other first-string players still under injury clouds.
A dislocated shoulder has curtailed Thomson's last two campaigns, with the 2017 one barely lasting 40 minutes, while Fatialofa dislocated his knee against the Blues last year, then suffered a bad post-op infection.
The Hurricanes hope to take both players to Pretoria, but there's still uncertainty about whether either will even be fit to play on Thursday.
"When boys have been a long time away, if there's any worries you don't want to rush them back. They're both nearly ready to go," Holland said.
The most recent additions to the team's rehab group are halfback Finlay Christie (knee) and utility back Peter Umaga-Jensen (shoulder), who both suffered injuries at the Brisbane Global Tens and face at least six to eight weeks on the sideline.

It's only the Blues....

Very smart by the Canes. Can't risk Beaudie losing confidence this early in the season.
-
Are the Umaga-Jensens ever not injured? The poor buggers never seem to be able string games together.

@toddy and for rugby in general, we've had Clarke, Broadhurst, Afeaki and now Goodes off the top of my head forced out due to concussion.
Others who have had issues many thought might end thier careers were McCaw, Ngatai, MacDonald, Smith, assume are plenty more.

Kane Barrett was another recent one

@bovidae While anecdotally is easy to say it will be worse now than 20+ years ago, and probably will get worse, the measures and testing available now will increase the numbers without taking into account the physicality compared with 20+ years ago as well.
-
Players from the amateur era retired due to concussion. Jock Hobbs is an example. But more would have just shaken off any symptoms and got on with it.
I agree that the increased physicality and force of collisions is greater now, which definitely plays a part.

From the bottom of the Goodes article
A sample of other players to retire due to concussion
- James Broadhurst - Hurricanes
- Leon MacDonald - Crusaders
- Steve Devine - Blues
- Ben Afeaki - Chiefs
- Craig Clarke - Chiefs
- David Briggs - Chiefs
- Shane Cleaver - Chiefs
- Kane Barrett - Blues
Really sad to see Goodes have to pull the pin. A really solid player who hadn't yet reached his full potential. Didn't he score a primo try (for a prop!) in our winning season... will have to have a hunt around for it.
