I loved Adam Parores article from years ago when he said Ryder needed to get in condition, lose weight etc.

The fact that he was way better than Ads despite being fat and pissed made for great reading.

Being fat (and in some cases pissed) didn't stop the likes of Boon, Gatting, Ranatunga, Warne or WG Grace)

@gunner He certainly hasn't done anything much at international level to demonstrate he's a genuine allrounder.

However, if you remove his test innings from the record, he actually averages around 35 in domestic first class cricket. On that score he's probably a better batsman than Kuggeleijn, (and at that lower level his record's not too far short of CDGH) so I can sort of see why Larsen might be indulging in what's probably wishful thinking!

If he wants to play much more international cricket, Bracewell certainly needs to show that he can bat at international level.

Fat Jesse - I reckon he's a case study for why sports teams should enforce no dickheads policies.

As any avid reader of The Grade Cricketer will tell you, the days of the fat star are goooorn. These days, your chances of selection are directly tied to the standard of your rig. A sloppy rig isn't getting you out of the 3rds, let alone internationals.

Ryder is still kicking around the domestic scene isn't he? Should chuck him in for the ODI series and watch the Fern melt down.

He should be it's an international representative side not a franchise - he is at worst the third best batsman in the country.

My question would be 'Do the other players have a problem with him that affects the play of the team?'

If not, then forget trying to soothe the press etc, just play him.

I actually have no idea about his form at the moment but he is certainly one of the most natural hitters of a cricket ball we have seen in NZ.

48 ODIs with a batting avg of 33 (scored at nearly run a ball) and bowling at 34 are pretty handy figures.

Hesson has issues with him - who knows which of the senior players (if any now) have issues with him and if they do most of them can deal with them during their time off on the couch.

Hadlee was a prick and hated by many including the captain there has to at some point be a will to actually pick the best team available and make it work. Ryder has been fine in almost every other environment (including county, franchise and domestic cricket) aside from the NZ one - maybe he isn't the issue?

Pretty sure it’s 90% Ryder, he clearly struggles with the expectation and pressure associated with international cricket. Where as he can remain under the radar when playing at a domestic level. Apart from the odd news story when he does well he’s largely left alone.

It’s a shame as he’s clearly one of the most talented cricketers we have produced,. 10 years of 3-4-5 with him Kane, and Roscoe would have been superb

I think booboo hit the nail on the head.

Jesse isn't playing for nz because of Jesse. Obviously he isn't willing to adapt his attitude or behaviour to play for the blackcaps.

Given his talent and the cricket life he's had I reckon good on him for living his life his way - he must've decided the shit wasn't worth the glamour.

Hits a fucking great ball from off stump over mid wicket! one of the best I've seen

@chris-b or a particular flavour of dickhead... a fair few folks thought Hesson was of that ilk during the captain saga. If only Jesse were a dry dickhead, he'd probably be in 😁

We would have been opening with Guptill and McCullum for most of that time too.
