The previous thread about him had a great run down of his work with the IHC over the years which if anything surpassed his contribution to rugby . .
An amazing man who led an incredibly full life, if was a privilege to have a few beers with him.He was a wonderful, wonderful contributor to IHC. He did so much, and it was never about rah rah look at meeeee, just a truly decent man who wanted to help. As someone with a disabled sibling, I will always hold him in the highest regard for that. I think the other thing alongside his amazing international feats, was his unwavering support for grassroots rugby. Bloody hell, walking into a small town rugby club and seeing him propped up at a bar table having a beer...jaw dropping. But that was him. Hard bugger, gruff, loyal, heart of gold.

There should be a national day of mourning. He put rugby on the map.And I daresay Te Kuiti too.
Always looked up to him as a kid. He was always our hero. Such a decent, hardworking, humble man, with huge heart and courage, honest as the day is long, true to his farming roots. salt of the earth. Rolled his sleeves up and got stuck in. Nothing was impossible. Everything had a solution and could be fixed Embodied the Kiwi spirit. Tough as teak (well, pine) but Gentle giant.
Took everything in his stride, including being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Truly Inspirational.
Without peer.
Bloody legend. -
RIP, the mightiest of trees has fallen.
I expect many at the NOrthland game today were like me in hearing the news when they announced the minutes silence
-
A sad day for NZ and NZers but also rugby people everywhere. Commiserations on the passing of a legend.

Very sad news for his family and the rugby world.
While we all knew it was coming, its still bloody horrible.
Surprises me that in this day and age of remarkable technology, there is still no cure for bloody rust...
Leg End.
A hero in our household, and we were all backs! As an aside I'm very much of the belief that cancer is in all of us and with some the switch is flipped and it becomes deadly.
Finding a cure is a fool's errand IMHO.

I remember with surprising clarity meeting Pinetree at a function, sharing a drink or two, having a chat and my wife says I was like a child meeting his hero.

Unfortunately, that's close to the truth. Preventing cells from turning cancerous effectively would mean humans could replicate their cells perfectly and hence not age. We'd become immortal.

There is research into treatments that seek out cancers cells based on proteins or other biological markers that they have which differ from healthy cells. Treatments could mean true targetted therapy one day. Who knows if any of us will be around to see it

Difficult to believe otherwise when so much time and money has been invested in so many brilliant minds over such a long period of time and we're still no closer.
We know the triggers, but when so many roll the dice of drinking, smoking, drugs, bad diet and minimal exercise and don't get cancer the risk reward seems worth it for the masses.

It certainly works for me

Legendary All Blacks flanker Sir Michael Jones has revealed the words of Sir Colin Meads in the wake of New Zealand's defeat to France in 1995. Acting as manager of the All Blacks at the time, Sir Colin oversaw the 22-15 defeat to France in Toulouse, taking the post match team talk himself.
Speaking to 1 NEWS today, Sir Michael spoke about the fury Sir Colin unleashed on the beaten team, even clearing other management out of the room.
"He told us we'd been playing like a bunch of so and so's. We were pretty much a disgrace to the All Blacks jersey" Sir Michael said.
"To be able to tell that to Sean Fitzpatrick, Zinzan Brooke, all these seasoned All Blacks that they were a disgrace, there was only one person who could do that."
