Haha he's been a Muslim for 9 years and only now realised that Islam prohibits banks that charge interest? Nice one SBW.

I don't adhere to any faith whatsoever but it's pretty obvious that anyone who does will do so to any manner of degrees of adherence, knowledge or understanding depending on their personal viewpoints or requirements.
How many Catholics fully know or adhere to the tenets of that religion or follow it's 'rules' to the letter? How many would pick, choose and change their views over their lifetime?

I'll get shot down by the usuals on this but I am starting to wonder whether much of the comment regarding this is because of the Muslim aspect? It is a religion that most of us in the western world fail to understand.

I would say the majority of Catholics have never even read the bible. The majority of them are complete fucking idiots.

But I won't go into that further as that's a topic of "Off-Topic", except to say I don't buy that SBW has suddenly realised Islam prohibits banks that charge interest. He just decided he's going to make a statement by taping over the logo without warning anyone, including his own fucking employer.

    This.

It's not even the start of the season. Last week was round 6. So the apologists are claiming that he only just realised he had a moral objection to banks and forgot to tell anyone before he actually took the field and was forced (the poor bugger just had no option) to tape over the logo? Piss off. He clearly aimed for this to have maximum effect. He could have easily announced this before the season and, of course, informed his bloody team about it so they could have removed the logo. But, that of course wouldn't make anywhere like the same statement. So much more effective to tape over the logo.

Look SBW is an incredible athlete and rugby player. He is 100% professional in terms of his training, nutrition, and commitment. It's no coincidence that his coaches rave about him and as far as I know his team mates have never had anything bad to say about him (well except the Bulldogs perhaps). But, surely even those who fap over the guy can see that this was an obvious publicity stunt?

And would people stop comparing this to Michael Jones. He actually had to make a massive sacrifice. Imagine having to give up an entire RWC, not to mentioned 2 semi-finals and dozens of other games. SBW has just opted out of having a sponsor on his jersey. Unless he's taking a pay cut for that, he isn't sacrificing a damn thing.

Where on earth does sacrifice come into things? Now you are just making shit up.
The reason I brought up the likes of Jones is that he made a stand based on his own beliefs that impacted on his team. Nothing to do with sacrifice.
Can you answer why you think SBW would want to carry out a publicity stunt? What purpose would it achieve?
It's not for promoting his religion as he has never anywhere preached or suggested others should follow his ideals.
It's not for money as what way can he profit from this.
That probably only leaves 'look at me, look at me!'. When you consider that he doesn't actively seek publicity any more than the average professional player this is a long bow to draw.
I get the point that people hate the way whatever he does grabs headlines, sometimes over better things to report on, but can you not grasp the fact that he doesn't write the headlines or talk on the radio or participate in the circus. It's others that feed off him not the other way around.
Yes, there are benefits to this increased profile as far as marketing incomes go but once again it is others (such as the NZRU and some of their sponsors that look to derive this benefit more than he does. If money and having his face on the TV is so important to him as you suggest then how come you don't see big endorsement contracts and campaigns from him?
I really do think that many people just hate the fact that he gets more coverage than they think he deserves (a good kiwi trait by the way to keep people humble) but blaming him for it is barking up the wrong tree.

As far as I know, Jones didn't play on Sunday for his entire senior career, so if team didn't want to select him they didn't have to. He didn't just rock up mid-season and announce that he'd decided to ditch Sunday games. I just don't see the relevance in even comparing the two.

I have no idea why SBW would do something like this. Perhaps he loves the attention, perhaps he strives for cred in the Muslim community. But to seriously claim there was nothing calculated about him waiting until his first game back, without even telling his team, that he had a moral objection to the sponsor is utterly ridiculous.

Ok, let's look at it this way. Why didn't he inform the Blues prior to the season starting or his first game back about this new moral objection? Why have his profile picture taken with the logo? Why talk to the press while wearing the logo a couple of days before the game? Where was the moral objection then?

I could make guesses that maybe the 'issue' only occurred to him after putting a match jersey on or someone pointed it out to him. His focus prior to that was on rehab not analysing the jersey.
I would also guess that both the NZRU and the Blues knew that there was a possibility he would invoke the clause but until it actually happened they didn't give it another thought. Even the use of strapping tape looks like a complete spur of the moment thing that he did before running out.
To all participants in this, the Blues, The NZRU, SBW and the BNZ it is a non-issue. Maybe that's why it happened the way it did.
I seriously doubt he sat there like some evil henchman plotting to make this big gesture in secret and springing it on everyone so he could simply go 'look at me'. That's the guesswork on your part which is really what seems utterly ridiculous. You are apportioning some seriously weird traits to the man if that's your assumption.

So he only noticed when "someone pointed it out to him". Yeah ok Crucial, that makes perfect sense. Maybe Tana pointed it out to him:

"Hey Sonny bro what about that moral objections to banks bro. BNZ is a bank."

"Oh damn bro, I've been too focused on my training to notice that it was there."

"No issue bro. Here's some pink tape to hide it. Nobody will notice."

What weird traits am I apportioning to him btw? Loves attention and loves being the focal point? Gee, wherever could I have gotten that idea.

"Absolutely, there's no doubt mistakes have been made in the lack of communication around this," NZ Rugby general manager Neil Sorensen said. "We've talked to Sonny and [manager] Khoder [Nasser] so lessons have been learnt"

    AIG is ok though:

"With AIG there is no problem at all - Sonny is okay to have an insurance company on his jersey at this stage of his career or life," Sorensen said. "He is not available to do promotions for them and they (AIG) are fine with it and will find other players to do it."

I'm sick of hearing that my views on this are because he's a Muslim.

That's just bullshit. Huge pile of stinking utter bullshit.

so what if this becomes the norm, players get to choose what sponsors logos appear on their jersey, what if 15 players in a match day squad choose to have Plunket, but not BNZ, you'd think BNZ will want to start looking at their sponsorship?

Granted in this instance, they would have loved the exposure, but hopefully NZPA and the players have learnt form this, and now if more players choose to invoke that clause...?

@taniwharugby Tony Smith is a moron. Where does he think the money will come from that AIG currently provide? Why is he pissy about them selling CDOs? Does he understand that charging interest is not the same as selling insurance?
