The Football War

The 1969 conflict between Honduras and El Salvador, made famous by Ryszard Kapuscinski's book, The Soccer War, had its roots in conditions that existed long before the two countries took the field for a fateful series of World Cup qualifying matches in June of that year.

After decades of heavy immigration, Salvadorans accounted for about 20 percent of Honduras' peasant population by 1967. Spurred by local resentment, the Honduran government passed a land reform law displacing thousands of Salvadorans.

With tensions high, the two countries met for the first match in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. The night before, Honduran fans had surrounded the hotel where the Salvadoran players were staying, keeping them awake throwing stones and firecrackers. El Salvador lost the game 1-0, prompting the suicide of a young Salvadoran fan. Her funeral became a national event, attended by the president.

At the return match, held one week later in El Salvador, the home fans' rage was so intense that Honduran players had to be taken to the stadium in armored cars. Instead of a Honduran flag, the Salvadorans raised a dirty dish towel on the flagpole. The home team won that one 3-0. A tiebreaker was held in Mexico City with both countries' fans separated by 5,000 baton-wielding Mexican police. El Salvador won the game 3-2, and hours later severed diplomatic relations with Honduras. Two weeks later, Salvadoran planes began bombing Tegucigalpa. The war ended four days later with a ceasefire arranged by the Organization of American States.
-

Disappointing. No tits out shots in the whole thing. Not a patch on her sister, and Penelope is not afraid to get the girls out. -
Google harder... she's a more voluptuous version of her sister... the parents really should keep having daughters. For science
yes, we all need science... science is good -
I like the story of the football war, here's another favourite,
Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3, serial number 004318 rolled off the assembly line at the factory in Stuttgart, Germany on April, 14, 1970. Silver with a burgundy interior, 004318 was an American specification machine prepped for European delivery. It's original owner, infamous film director Roman Polanski, was coming to Europe to escape the publicity surrounding the death of his wife, actress Sharon Tate, at the hands of the Manson Family. The Polish director ordered the car from Mercedes of Beverly Hills, and arranged for the car to be driven to Cannes, France, where he would be attending the international film festival.
The driver hired to deliver the car from Stuttgart to Cannes was an unemployed race driver by the name of Klaus Pach. Pach had driven briefly for the Porsche factory team, but was fired for being too hard on the equipment. There were also rumors that he had driven in the 1967 Targa Florio while intoxicated. While on the way to Cannes, Klaus stopped at the LeMans circuit in France to visit his friends participating in the 24-hour endurance race. After drinking a large quantity of champagne, the totally inebriated Pach made a wrong turn exiting the paddock. Unfortunately, this was onto the main straight of the track just as the race was starting!
After realizing his error, Klaus made the best of things and continued to race. He kept up with the leaders for several laps as the mighty M100 engine allowed him to keep pace with the factory Porsches, Ferraris and GT-40 Fords. Black flagged by the race officials, Pach ignored their order to pit, and soldiered on for nearly an hour before running out of gas. He coasted to a stop on the Mulsanne straight, where he was whisked off by the gendarmerie. The big Benz was impounded, and Polanski notified. The director was livid and refused to accept the car. It was then returned to the factory, who then shipped it to the original dealer in Beverly Hills.
The car was displayed in the showroom on Rodeo Drive for several weeks, until actor Werner Klemperer stopped by, looking for a new car. Klemperer, who portrayed P.O.W. camp commandant Colonel Klink in the popular TV series, Hogan's Heroes, bought the car at a significant discount. He drove it daily to the studio lot, where co-star Bob Crane bemused it was the colonel's "staff car". Klemperer drove the car for several years, until Crane's untimely death. He then sold it because it brought back too many memories of his dearly departed friend.
Owner #3 of 300 SEL 6.3 #004318 was flamboyant comedian Rip Taylor. Riding high on his success with The $1.98 Beauty Contest, Taylor attended many events in the Hollywood "party" scene in his sterling Mercedes. He kept many of the props used in the show in the 6.3's spacious trunk, and often entertained friends and onlookers with impromptu performances. When the The $1.98 Beauty Contest was canceled, Taylor was somewhat strapped for cash and sold the Mercedes to pay some outstanding debts.
In early 1979, a portly Texas millionaire with a fascination for silver, purchased the car from a Gardena, California car lot called "Cash For Your Car." Nelson Bunker Hunt had the car driven to his Lone Star estate where it was fitted with longhorns and served as his sport limo. "Bunky" loved to take potential investors on high speed tours of his rich land holdings and cut many business deals in the rear of the capacious sedan. When the silver market collapsed, ownership of the 6.3 was transferred to The Englehard Minerals and Chemicals Corporation as part of Hunt's release from a contractual obligation to purchase 19 million ounces of silver at almost triple the market price. The car then sat in storage for five years until it was placed at auction in Oklahoma City.
In 1991, current owner Richard Riegler discovered the Mercedes while on a business trip to Norman, Oklahoma. The engineering consultant had been searching for just the right Mercedes to compliment his daily ride, "Blondie" - a champagne with palomino 300 Turbo Diesel workhorse. Traveling frequently to the Oklahoma City suburb, Richard finally decided to purchase the 6.3 and drive it to his home in New Jersey.
What ensued is the fodder of myth and legend. Riegler, whose legendary "lead foot" and "iron butt" have gotten him into trouble with the law and blacklisted from every major car rental agency, proceeded to set a new record for the trip from Oklahoma City to his Jersey Shore home. Needless to say, Riegler's trip would have made Cannonball Baker proud, and probably would make Rich and the silver bahnstormer leading contenders for the famous race named in Baker's honor!
Riegler named his new acquisition "Rudi", in honor of its designer Rudolf Uhlenhaut. Uhlenhaut was the head designer at Mercedes for many years, and was the leading proponent of the Teutonic hot rod concept. Putting Benz's largest engine in their top of the line sedan was his dream. A true visionary, Uhlenhaut was also admired for his driving skills, something "Rudi's" present owner can aspire to. The spirit lives on in coastal New Jersey, and if you are passed on a highway by a large silver blur, just flash your lights to let "Rudi" know you concur!
It was a re-mix of a really funny book that Jon and his comedian mate David Downs when he was ay Massey, I did a couple of pages and Petra did a chapter on fashion I think. We wanted to have a go at writing more but the publishing deal was only with David and Jon so Jon had to pay us out his own money ... so I acted like a dick (no surprise as I was 24 and acting like a dick quite often at that stage of my life), wrote the minimum requirement and then had a sulk in the office for a few days. If I could travel back in time I would be EXACTLY the sort of 24 year old that I would want to punch in the mouth.
My ex who was a crap gift giver usually gave me that book one year , I used to find it every time we moved house start reading it and crack up and then she'd moan at me.I'm glad you explained who wrote it because I'd be surprised if Petra actually wrote some of the shit in the "Petra says" quotes. Not that I know her or anything of course. -
Dude I was waiting for you to watch that one! Glad it hit the spot. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
