@Crucial somewhere in Wellington, an @MN5 sits in silence....
I can name that Grand Slam team from 1 through to 15. Legends all of them.
Still one of my best rugby memories. I wasn't at Murrayfield itself but was living in Edinburgh at the time and watching in a pub in the New Town. I have never ever witnessed a city go off like it did that day. Every pub in Rose St had queues outside all night long. Quiet little bars were having to cope with the overflow and think there is many a Scots lad or Lassie that can trace their conception to that wonderful day.
The drama of the game was immense, from the slow walk out by the Scots to they sheer look of fear in the eyes of the Poms.
One of the best. Rates alongside the AB series win in SA in watching pleasure. My old man had that game on VHS. That team then came and had a really good tour of NZ. Jeffrey and Calder weren't that big even by amateur standards, both were 30 odd, looked 50 odd but still looked younger than the English props and fuck they were a tenacious pair. Sole was a great leader too and Tony Stanger....wonder when the last time he had to buy a pint was?

@Crucial Good doco, thanks. -said through gritted teeth. It was an amazing day though and I can still recall the bitter disappointment at the end but also the constant fear that it was not going to be our day. Right from the off.
Wasn't the crowd great?

The scrambling determined defence by Calder and Jeffrey was awesome to see again. Those guys played that second half like they truly were defending their country.
Just to combine this thread with another, here's a little clip of Calder being the hard bastard he was after Sean Fitzpatrick pronounced his name incorrectly.
If celebrity boxing was around in those days I'm sure big money would be paid to see Calder v Cowboy Shaw in a brawl.

Think Fitzy came out of that the 'hard bastard.
Took a butt to the face and carried on.Hollywood by Fitzy. Calder barely touched him.

Same old same old. Howley needs a win, by whatever means necessary.
Up to the players now
Wales team v Ireland
Halfpenny; North, Davies, S Williams, L Williams; Biggar, Webb
Evans, Owens, Francis, Ball, AW Jones (capt), Warburton, Tipuric, MoriartyReplacements:
Baldwin, Smith, Lee, Charteris, Faletau
G Davies, S Davies, Roberts -
Schmidt taking the same route. Only enforced change is Bowe for Trimble. Otherwise, it's McGrath, Best, Furlong, Toner, Ryan, Stander, O'Brien, Heaslip,
Murray, Sexton, Henshaw, Ringrose, Bowe, Zebo, Kearney. No real pizzazz/snarls going into this one from either side. England and Scotland seem to be soaking up all the media attention which is not a bad thing for this match.

@MiketheSnow I was almost expecting a change after Edwards semi throwing of North under the bus earlier on in the week. I thought his comments in the media were a bit rough really.
-
North needs a rest and/or a different coaching regime.

He definately needs a different tackling regime, classic example of a guy who was huge as a kid so tackled with his head in any position he wanted & now as an adult cops 16 stone guys thighs in the head every time he makes a tackle. And as a result now tackles with the enthusiasm of a DJ mixing Max Keys latest album

Whilst I agree he could do with a rest, I really felt that Edwards' comments were out of order.

Farrell looking a bit suss

Surprising that they would bring May into the match day squad, I would have thought that Slade was the ready made replacement - plus they might need his place kicking if Ford has another mare with the boot.

He's scared of the Scots midfielders and who can blame him

This is a pretty enjoyable game! Wales up on Ireland, 8-6. Battering Murray and Sexton, just not that good at finishing. Ireland's only option seems to be to kick, even throwing out the defensive bomb with great gusto.
Barnes is yet to make his howler and also hasn't as yet pulled out his ambiguous law call.
-
Fuck me this match is tense.
Wales definitely on top overall but the breakouts from sides is keeping the nerves on edge.
Barnes has had his yellow with Sexton and Wales took some advantage. Murray off but Marmion doing ok.
