@booboo As I said, I don't think anyone has covered themselves in glory here.
You guys have glossed pretty conveniently over the actions of the NZRU here too. You can hypothesize all you like, but they waited way too long to act on the discovery they made. Releasing it on the morning of the game was far from ideal for anyone.
Under your day-by-day logic, why not just wait one more day? You've already sat on it since Monday, so why not wait until after the game?
And then Hanson's response to a police investigation is basically to call 'bullshit'.
I think the ARU have overshot the mark a bit, but I don't think the NZRU have made it any better either.
-
@barbarian Good post and fair points Baba.
Although has Hansen called bullshit? He said it's bizarre and unbelievable - which seems like a fair response when you learn a guy you employed has been arrested for it.
I agreed with the majority of Cully's article that this makes nobody look good at all. Although, as Cheika has acknowledged, dont go expecting any apologies anytime soon. Nobody apologises for anything that's been insinuated - that was a position invented by Aussie media, as everybody, and I seriously mean everybody, thought it was bookies.
NZRU still haven't really explained though why they discovered it on Monday and reported it in game day - they are deserving of criticism for this.

The NZRU did not "release" it st any stage.
Paul/NZ Herald/NZRU published it yhen as they had found iyt about it and work in a competitive media environment. They're not going to wait another day. Why woukd they? A competitor might beat them to the punch.
You Aussies including Pulver and Krusty have it in your head that it was some sort of press release. It wasn't.

A couple of things.
Discovered Monday. Reported to police Thursday I understand (after awaiting advice from the CEO who was on a plane somewhere), Journo finds out Friday, publishes the next day.
-
@booboo Discovered Monday, why not reported Monday?
It's naive to think that NZRU had nothing to do with delaying it. Maybe they didn't plan on releasing it going viral on game day, but they should have at least acknowledged the risk of this and the best way of dealing with it.
The CEO excuse is bullshit. Nobody in this day and age is uncontactable for 3 days.

@MajorRage I'm sure it was reported to the hotel management on the Monday but not the police until Tew had been informed.
yeah I think they reported it to the Hotel immediately, but it was after this things moved slower, whether the Hotel did it or as you say, they needed to notify Tew who musta been somewhere odd to not get hold of in 4 days?
-
Maybe they didn't release anything earlier in the week because they didn't want the whole week to be dominated by a shit storm of media attention. That would have been a major disruption to both teams.
I don't see how it coming out on game day would be disruptive, particularly to the Wallabies. Surely they would know it wasn't them and it would be business as usual. This is just more diversionary bullshit by the clown and aru to disguise how shit they were in 2016.

Yes, any of the above points made by many are fair.
I'm just not of the view that NZRU are totally blameless on it being found Monday & media blowing up about it on Saturday, game day.
If the shoe was on the other foot, we'd be rightly questioning ARU about it - given the lack of a decent explanation.

Don't you think the plan was to keep it under wraps full stop? They just kept a positive drug test under wraps for two months and would have for longer if it wasn't for Super Rugby season starting. The Smith and Hansen contract extensions were handled very quietly. This isn't a team that has a history of leaking to the media full stop.
I'm pretty sure Paul was the same reporter who wrote the Jane/Weepu story on the morning of the RWC QF. I do not remember the pitchforks being out for him saying he was ruining our chances and killing the mood of the day etc etc.

@rotated In a word, No.
So given that do you think AB management leaked it because -
They thought Aussie management did bug them - and wanted that out in the media. Even knowing that doing so would probably hinder police efforts to find who was ultimately responsible. Remembering the coach is a former police detective.
They didn't think Aussie management had anything to do with it but I guess wanted to paint it as if they did? Or something? I don't know. At that point you would have to reconsider what kind of people Shand/Hansen etc are.
Maybe it's a false choice. But I just don't see how leaking that information on the morning of the game is to NZ's benefit. The news leaking once certain third parties became involved on the Thursday seems much more likely.
-
@rotated At what point did I say they leaked it? I said they weren't blameless for it coming out so far after it had been found and, as yet, had not provided a decent explanation for it.
Rightly or wrongly, this thing blew out on the morning of game day. And that's shit for everybody. And NZRU are not 100% innocent about this.
By all means, I'm happy to be corrected if you can point me to a decent source where the NZRU have explained why they found it on Monday and why the media blew up about it on Saturday - game day.
