I guess the biggest issue is there have been players who wont be in attendance promoting it....although that is down to Duco.

at the end of the day, NZR with their collective agreement are looking after the players, and while players want to play, their bodies simply cannot play all year round, something has to give

Duco maintains there are 10 ABs from the EOYT in the squad.

It is conceivable they could table guys like Ioane, Naholo, McKenzie, Moala, Squire, Todd, Jordie & Scott Barrett, Tu’ungafasi, Coltman, Luatua and Dixon and I guess it's technically correct.

It's a fucking sideshow anyway, and destined to be short lived. Any "competition" where the Brumbies can wheel out Larkham and Walker is a joke. Keep the ABs away from playing code in Brisbane in Feb.

Reading this article, it could possibly be a matter of personal choice of the player:

Duco Australia chief executive Rachael Carroll responded on Tuesday morning, saying that 10 players who featured in the tour would play in the tournament - including its ambassadors.

Jerome Kaino, Israel Dagg, Ben Smith and Damian McKenzie have all been promoting the event, which takes place on February 11-12 at Suncorp Stadium.

Carroll said they had received provisional squads from the New Zealand Super Rugby franchises and these players were included.

"These players have indicated a strong desire to play in the tournament, and their Super Rugby clubs have selected them," Carroll said.

"These selections are now subject to ratification by New Zealand Rugby. We are negotiating with New Zealand Rugby in good faith to confirm these selections."

Carroll also said Duco had received provisional squads from Australian franchises and the tournament would have in excess of 20 Wallabies.

The final squads will be confirmed early next month.

The New Zealand Rugby players' collective agreement agrees a 12-week break from the game after an All Black's season ends.

For the All Blacks who went on the northern tour that's not until after February 11-12, the weekend of the Tens at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

NZ Rugby players' association chief executive Rob Nichol revealed that all parties - NZ Rugby, the All Blacks, the player and their respective Super Rugby franchise - were all together in that agreement, so an All Black could play in Brisbane subject to their own personal circumstances.

But NZ Rugby is focusing on the bigger picture in 2017, with the British and Irish Lions touring this year.

Nichol said Duco were aware that All Blacks wouldn't be compelled to play in the tournament, which is the first of its kind.

"When the Brisbane Tens tournament was pulled together, it was always with the understanding that All Blacks on that end-of-year tour could not be compelled to play - and that it would be subject to that model.

"At the end of the day, it would come around a decision to the individual and where they're at. That's the model that we're working to and that's what we've known all along."

@Stargazer is down to the player, their franchise and NZ Rugby together.

Some of these guys would play every week if they could, which isn't ideal long term. I know a player that would play super rugby on a Friday and play club footy on the Saturday, and used to get in trouble, yet still did it.

Just heard that Duco claim that there are ABs named in some of the squads they have received, so maybe there is a breakdown somewhere and this is once again turning into an attempt at bashing NZR?

Pretty sure players fronting marketing for the 9s haven't fronted to play too.

This is obviously decisive if I'm even going to think about buying tickets. If guys like DMac, JBarrett and Fifita will be there then that's good enough for me. Only 2 NZ super teams playing in Brisbane this year.

I don't think it is a breakdown in communication. The franchises submit a team based on the players that put their hands up. At that stage they haven't had the approval (or rejection) from the NZRU.

Has anyone defined where the line is being drawn? I can understand no Dagg for instance, but Jordie Barrett? DMac?

I'm all for not risking All Blacks in this circus. Especially at the start of a big year where the Lions are the centrepiece. 12 weeks is a minimal break on the body after nine months of punishment, and shouldn't be curtailed. From a Crusaders POV I wouldn't risk the likes of a Mo'unga either, given how crucial he is to us. And if the Brumbies are increasing the farce factor by playing Larkham and Walker then we may as well roll out Mehrts, Afato So'oalo and Caleb fucking Ralph.

It's an exhibition tournament, it's doomed to failure, and I genuinely believe Duco and/or NZR have a false advertising case to answer.

I'm all for keeping players injury free. But tell me, how much bigger is the injury risk of playing at the Brisbane 10s than preseason games on farm land or bad, rural rugby grounds?

I don't know if any of you watched the preseason game between the Highlanders and Crusaders in Waimumu (Gore) last year, but the condition of that field was horrendous, partially because of the wet weather. Several players got injured during that game (I remember Marty McKenzie being side-lined for weeks after that game).

The injury count after the preseason game between the Canes and Blues in Eketahuna was also terrible, except that here the ground was hard and dry due to the hot weather. Motu Matu'u, Matt Proctor, Ben May, TJ Perenara, Brad Shields, Leni Apisai and Willis Halaholo all got injured during that game, and the first three all missed the beginning of the 2016 season.

We'll see that kind of preseason games again this year. So I'm not entirely convinced that the important squad members or ABs should be excluded from playing at the Brisbane 10s due to injury risk, if they also play those preseason games.

Having sufficient rest after a long Super and AB season is more convincing, but it also depends on the workload of players during that season, which varies from player to player.

I'll be glued to my tv screen that weekend; I think it's an excellent format, the only thing new being SR teams playing a 10s tournamend (10s in itself is nothing new). Only the timing is a bit off, but when actually would be a good time? In any other year, that could be the June break and teams would then be playing without their ABs, too. This year is just different due to the Lions tour. But of course, June is also different from a weather perspective. I've no idea what Brissy June weather is like ...

@Stargazer many of the frontline players don't play pre-season anyway, and again comes down to the individual player and franchise about how that pans out.

Pre-season matches more often include players from WTG or Dev sides as well.

The most poignant remark there, Stargazer, is that this year is different due to the Lions tour. It's only just over four months away; not the time to be packing the All Blacks off to a high-pace pre-sets exhibition tournament on a rock hard ground in 30+ degree temperatures, while cutting into their designated rest period. Even if the tournament wasn't on, I'd much rather they played a pre-season game in Gore or Motueka with an expanded bench and 20 minute quarters than in Brisbane.

As for Marty McKenzie getting injured last year - that was carefully orchestrated by a group of concerned Crusaders supporters.

Stargazer, you are the ultimate rugby nerd, you would watch an U11s B-grade game if it was on TV.

If i can find a spare half hour over the weekend I'll probably have a look, but there is no way i am structuring time around it.

Yes, definitely more WTG/Dev players, but still plenty of ABs and frontline players. For example, these were the teams for that Farmlands Cup game:

Highlanders: Brendon Edmonds, Liam Coltman, Siosiua Halanukonuka, Mark Reddish, Tom Franklin, Gareth Evans, James Lentjes, Luke Whitelock (c), Josh Renton, Marty Banks, Patrick Osborne, Teihorangi Walden, Malakai Fekitoa, Waisake Naholo, Matt Faddes
Reserves: Ash Dixon, Daniel Lienert-Brown, Ross Geldenhuys, Joe Wheeler, Sio Tomkinson, Aaron Smith, Liam Squire, Jason Emery, Ryan Tongia, Lima Sopoaga, Elliot Dixon, Shane Christie, Jackson Hemopo

Crusaders: David Havili, George Bridge, Sean Wainui, Kieron Fonotia, Sione Fifita, Richie Mo'unga, Andy Ellis, Jordan Taufua, Tim Boys, Jimmy Tupou, Sam Whitelock (c), Scott Barrett, Mike Alaalatoa, Codie Taylor, Joe Moody.
Reserves: Ged Robinson, Wyatt Crockett, Oli Jager, Luke Romano, Mitchell Dunshea, Reed Prinsep, Leon Fukofuka, Ben Volavola, Marty McKenzie, Jone Macilai, Mitchell Hunt, Nemani Nadolo.

And these were the teams for the Eketahuna game:

Hurricanes: Nehe Milner-Skudder, Cory Jane, Matt Proctor, Ngani Laumape, Julian Savea, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara (c), Victor Vito, Callum Gibbins, Brad Shields, Mark Abbott, Blade Thomson, Jeff Toomaga-Allen, Motu Matu'u, Reggie Goodes.
Reserves: Leni Apisai, Chris Eves, Ben May, Hisa Sasagi, Loni Uhila, James Blackwell, Vaea Fifita, Tony Lamborn, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Otere Black, James Marshall, Pita Ahki, Willis Halaholo, Jason Woodward, Wes Goosen, Malo Tuitama

Blues: Matt Duffie, Melani Nanai, Rene Ranger, George Moala, Matt Vaega, Matt McGahan, Billy Guyton, Steven Luatua, Jack Ram, Jerome Kaino (c), Hoani Matenga, Scott Scrafton, Ofa Tu'ungafasi, Quentin MacDonald, Namatahi Waa. Reserves: James Parsons, Nic Mayhew, Sione Mafileo, Patrick Tuipulotu, Matt Matich, Bryn Hall, Ihaia West, Male Sa'u, Charlie Faumuina, Josh Bekhuis, Blake Gibson, Joe Edwards, Tevita Li, Michael Little, Lolagi Visinia

Ha, correct, although I'd only watch those U11s Bs if it was an Hawke's Bay team.😉 Mrs SG being a rugby nerd as well certainly helps. And doing other stuff while watching rugby on tv.

@Stargazer as Shark alludes to in the next post, how much time do these guys all get too?

Yes it would be great if we could have the best players on show, but at the end of the day, I'd rather they were on show when it matters.

Chris Boyd is stating that NMS, Jordie and Vaea Fifita will play the Brisbane Tens as none of them played a minute of the EOYT so according to the NZR's own policy they are not considered current All Blacks.

So it's a home thing for the Reds, but Quade is allowed to skip because he's boxing. And they are playing Chris Latham.

And they are playing a trial against the Rebels 2 days later, so there will be heavy rotation.

How many different ways can you say "sideshow"?
