What about Mosese Bason? I wonder if some teams might make a play for both of the brothers?

We’ve lost Howden and with Tuifua now going to France I think the Canes will have M Bason locked down.

Suppose it will just depend on how good he thinks he is and whether he believes he should be getting game time as soon as possible.

Two players that might be after contracts elsewhere that have done a lot of training with the Canes over recent seasons have been Sione Halalilo (openside flanker) and Dominic Ropeti (no 8). Pending on AB selections to Lakai and Kirifi they’ll likely play big mins for the Lions this year so maybe two players other franchises could go after.

That openside was quite impressive when I saw him play for the Hunters.

He’s next in line for the Canes but because we haven’t had injuries to Kirifi and Lakai all season he hasn’t featured for the main side. He’s quite a dynamic 7, quite similar to Lasaga who’s now with the Highlanders.

Do you guys have a list of players who are off contract at the end of the season?

Signed through until 2025 (not yet extended).

    • Pouri Rakete-Stones
    • Siale Lauaki
    • Jacob Devery
    • Raymond Tuputupu
    • Josh Taula
    • Will Tucker
    • Zach Gallagher
    • Aries’s Poliko
    • Ere Enari
    • Riley Hohepa
    • Callum Harkin
    • Lucas Cashmore
    • Dan Sinkinson
    • Kini Naholo
    • Kade Banks

From the players above, I can see Gallagher, Harkin, Naholo (if he isn’t going to Japan) and a couple hookers as the priorities. Lauaki and Banks would also be good re-signings.

@sparky great signing. Good tight-head props are a dime a dozen atm.

    Yes and then no.

No news so far. I expect him to be gone burgers though. A non-contact injury like that is usually pretty serious.

The bye has come at the right time, he could jump over to Fiji and visit the same healing guru that fixed his brother before the 2015 WC.

Kini has likely played his last game for the Canes. Gone for the season.

Just spoke to a Japan contact about this.

‘The club were waiting on the result of the injury and that will impact his contract’ were the words.

Seeing as it’s an ACL, I wouldn’t be surprised if they can withdraw their contract offer, either that or it would be for a significantly less sum . Might end up seeing him back in Canes colours next season if the above happens.

Here's hoping. I think the form he was in pre injury probably had him re-thinking his choice in Japan anyway.

Club he was/is heading too looks likely to drop to Div 2 if what the Taranaki union man told me is correct, so they may see it as good chance to save some $s anyway. He would probably be wasted there.

Can confirm Devan Flanders played the whole second 40 for Havelock North v Taradale. Havelock won 38-31 against the previously unbeaten Taradale.

He’ll likely come straight onto the reserve bench next week for the Canes after Iose was in a brace after the game last night.

    Good to have him back.

Alright, so the equation is simple. Beat the Reds on Friday and then Moana the following week and we will end up in 4th.

Big injury clouds over Punivai and Iose but thankfully we have depth at wing, and the likely return of Flanders to offset the Iose injury. Not sure if Sullivan will also be available against the Reds after failing an HIA. I assume not so with Lomax and Delany also likely to be out I think our team will resemble the below.

    1. Numia
    2. Aumua
    3. Tosi
    4. Gallagher
    5. Walker-Leawere
    6. Shields
    7. Kirifi
    8. Lakai
    9. Roigard
    10. Love
    11. Fineanganofo
    12. Higgins
    13. Proctor
    14. Sullivan/Banks
    15. Harkin
    16. Tuputupu
    17. Rakete-Stones
    18. Mafileo
    19. Plummer
    20. Flanders
    21. Enari
    22. Cameron
    23. Umaga-Jensen

With some injury returns, that canes bench could really outshine the chiefs. Especially if the canes are allowed to select just Higgins as the starting XV and have a 22 strong bench.
