The online article is paywalled but here is the intro:

The financial challenges facing the Hurricanes have been laid bare by a $700,000 loss in 2024 and a forecast of a further deficit this year. The losses follow a $1.4 million deficit in 2023 and the Super Rugby club has turned to existing shareholders for an additional $1M in capital as it works through a plan to return to positive financial territory in the 2026 year and beyond.

    • Depressed crowd numbers and increased costs stress bottom line.
    • The Hurricanes also lost $1.4M in 2023.
    • Existing shareholders have until Friday to take up new share offer.

In the full article Cully also talks about the cost of the tenancy at NZCIS and accommodating a large squad including WTG and academy players.

Sounds like a job tailor made for Elon Musk to sort out. First on the chopping block = D. Larsen.

@Nepia They'd have to buy some shares first. 😉

    The owners are:
    Wellington RFU (50%)
    Horowhenua-Kapiti RFU (3.12%)
    Richard Mansell, Coastlands CEO (12.5%)
    Y11 Sport & Media Group (34.38%)

Yep following Nepia's rightfully insightful idea, I think the Mighty Nua union should take them over. Already got shares (quite a major shareholder compared to the Bay), and obviously in the centre of Canes area, Levin Domain would have no charges probably to play there, and would be great to see a filled 'stadium!😁
Let's face it fellas it all adds up!😉

A strong team with some players returning from long-term injuries.

Good to see Higgins back, as well as Sinkinson and Cashmore. Tidy backline that one.

I'll be interested to see the Chiefs team, but with the injuries the backline will be WTG and U20 players probably.

I'm more interested in seeing how Israel Time, Nui Muriwai and Ietitaia Campbell go as I have never really heard of them although in the back of my mind can recall seeing a guy called Muriwai playing for Thames Valley a few years back. In light of the Hurricanes reported financial struggles would it be possible that they are former Wellington club players now based in Hamilton that have been drafted in to make up the numbers on the bench for this game as a cost saving measure?

Muriwai is from the Waikato (played for University) but went down to Wellington last year as an injury replacement for the NPC. He was a regular in the 23, usually backing up Preston.

Nailed it, yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he became a permanent fixture in that Wellington 23 next year. The weather might be fairly average for this game so it might come down to the battle of the forwards.

Canes instagram looks like Proctor running around in full flight. Also saw that stuff article saying Brett Cameron trying to make it back before the end of season which is pretty crazy.

I saw that video at the airport, which clearly shows Proctor. IIRC you can take 27 players for overseas games.

@Bovidae Yeah, shows Sullivan, PUJ, Proctor, Higgins and Fineanganofo. Might see some rotation in the wingers this round

2027? He'll be running out of time to sign for the Blues and complete the SR set. 🙂

@Bovidae reminds me of Ross Geldenhuys who played Chiefs, Hurricanes, Highlanders, Kings, Lions, Stormers, Cheetahs, Sharks and Bulls. He's got to hold the record for most super rugby franchises played for.

@handa457 did he actually play for the canes/chiefs? Pretty impressive, looks like he's still going?

He is ok, nothing special but can do a decent job at wing.
But why are we not playing Fehi Fineanganofo who is a game breaker?

He is one of the HIA absentees.
