    Fuck. Unlucky Landers.

Nothing unlucky. Just the usual dumb decisions that have plagued us over the last 4-5 years

Dude. We played well. Was a hard fiest round game. That is a quality Tahs side and we fought well.

I get that and if it was fresh set of players and they were genuinely trying to implement a new game plan, I’d cop it. But it’s the same mistakes, by the same players, at the same moments. Its been an Otago issues, it’s been a Highlanders issue. I just don’t see that change in mindset or composure so the same mistakes will keep on happening

Nah. That's bullshit. This is a Highlanders side and, apart from blue and gold has very little to do with Otago.

When Otago played we lacked ideas and game plan. We lost to teams we had lesser players than us.

This was a team that everyone said during the week should have been well beaten. Has one current international. The opposition, has heaps. We should have won. We didn't. We went to their house and nearly snuck away with the china.

We had a game plan. It was scrapy, but we stuck to it and it nearly came off. Yeah we made mistakes. It happens. But, there is a lot to build one. I'm looking forward to knocking over the Blues next week.

Well the proof will be in the pudding when they play the Kiwi sides. I don’t see this ending well

Nah. That's bullshit. This is a Hoghlanders side and, apart from blue and gold has very little to do with Otago.

When Otago played we lacked ideas and game plan. We lost to teams we had lesser players than us.

This was a team that everyone said during the week should have been well beaten. Has one current international. The opposition, has heaps. We should have won. We didn't. We went to their house and nearly snuck away with the china.

That gameplan was noticeably different to the one we have used since JJ left. It was reminiscent of what we did in 2014, which then evolved in 2015 with more dynamic attackers.

I kind of figure that once Millar and JRK are up to speed this will improve, and when Pledger comes in, it will up tick again because I am assuming he’d be quicker the ruck than other options.

I’ll go against the grain, I don’t think Fakatava was woeful. He was very rusty no doubt, but that is why he didn’t start. He has been a slow starter to the season for a few years now, so again, by the middle of the season, so long as we avoid too many key injuries this side will be humming with the ball.

Defensively, it was textbook back the defence. That game was not exactly a barometer, because it was so open, but in large patches the defence was good. They just need to sort the balance of who starts in the pack and who comes off the bench. By the end we lacked size/the sizeable guys were shagged, which made us too easy to pick off. The simply fix next week would be to start Broughton, and have Naeta come on for Dunshea around the hour mark.

..Another enjoyable game, Highlanders went as well as I hoped, not bad at all. They need some more locks, if they don't start giving Holland and Dunshea a bit iof a break, they will be buggered in a couple of weeks. The game was played at good pace etc, and everyone was stuffed at end.

Best Highlanders : Tangitau, Tavatavanawai, Hastie, Withy.
Rather good : Manson, Renton, Lasaqa, Hurley, Broughton, Ma'u, Kautai
Could have done better : Robinson, Telea, Dunshea
    Unratable : Bell, DLB, Cameron

@cgrant can't say I was impressed by Lasaqa. Haven't seen him before and the only noticeable thing to me was how much of a midget he was (a busy midget, but yeah).

Good to have the Tahs win and the JAS hype build. Enjoyed that one.

@Bones Think he probably lacks a bit of size, but so does Kirifi for the Canes.

He was busy at the breakdown… think he will be a 15-20 off the bench

@cgrant I would say Taine Robinson gets a pass mark in terms of a starting debut, he didn't actively annoy me where as Gilbert who's been in this team forever is very error ridden, so maybe Millar to 10, Robinson to 15?

Pretty great effort by both teams considering we're in mid-Feb round 1.

Very happy for the Tahs. Limited pre-season, a LOT of new players, new coach... coming away with a win after the buzzer is huge. Highlanders are a good side and played tough.

Waratahs pack looks as good as it's been in a decade. If they stay fit they could be anything. Rob Leota added a lot of punch, I love his style.

Only saw highlights but that Tangitau has some gas! What's the good oil on him? Obviously 7s background but one to watch out for?

They're really building him up as the next big Folau. Gas pedals are pumping.

I watched part of The Breakdown from NZ and they were effusive about JAS - very much in agreement that Australia, and also SR, need a good hype story or two

once again very glad i didnt read the match thread during the game

gutted with the close loss...but i enjoyed that game in general, thought it was pretty fast paced and exciting, lots to work on but promising moments

I watched 3 games and was really happy with how the refs worked to speed up the set plays, straight away telling people to hurry up

one thing about his game, how shit was that pitch, for a new stadium it was tearing up from kickoff!

The opening round's games were all pretty exciting, close. Refs did speed them up too, sadly probably won't apply once playing internationally. Despite all five games my preferred team lost, they were a good watch.

Or even into the next month. There's been a pattern of new directives eroding swiftly.
