First Super Rugby match thread of the year and both teams will likely go into this one with a few of their big guns missing.

Notable names that I’ve heard of include Lomax, Aumua, Love, Taylor and Bell with a few non All Blacks also missing.

Likely starting XVs at this stage are:

    Crusaders:

    1. Williams
    2. Moananu (Taylor and Bell out)
    3. Newell
    4. Barrett
    5. Shalfoon (Strange and Hannah out)
    6. Grace
    7. Blackadder
    8. Kellow
    9. Hotham
    10. Kemara/O’Connor (Reihana out)
    11. Reece
    12. Havili (c)
    13. Aumua (Ennor and McLeod likely out)
    14. Fihaki
    15. Jordan

    Hurricanes

    1. Numia
    2. Devery/Tuputupu (Aumua likely out)
    3. Tosi (Lomax likely out)
    4. Delany (Gallagher likely out)
    5. Walker-Leawere
    6. Shields (Flanders likely out)
    7. Lakai
    8. Iose
    9. Roigard
    10. Hohepa - Godfrey (has done enough in the pre season to get the gig over Hohepa). Hohepa might start at 10 with Godfrey able to cover 15.
    11. Naholo
    12. Higgins
    13. Proctor
    14. Banks
    15. Godfrey (Love out)

Pretty close to the crusaders starting xv with the injuries
Lilo-Willie will start at 8 and Kellow to the bench will probably be the only change

    Bower,
    Cahill,
    Kellow
    Preston
    O'Connor
    Springer
will likely be the bench with a prop and Hooker from outside the squad filling in.

Oh yup forgot about Lio-Willie. I don’t rate Grace, I think you’d be better moving Blackadder to 6, start Kellow at 7 and Lio-Willie at 8. Grace could then cover lock/loose forward from the bench.

    Canes likely bench:

    1. Devery/Tuputupu
    2. Rakete-Stones
    3. Mafileo
    4. Plummer/Allen/Taula
    5. Kirifi
    6. Vijoen
    7. Harkin
    8. Umaga-Jensen

I'm changing the likely team for this week with the unfortunate news of Devan Flanders breaking his leg. I feel like this could be a bit of a cripple fight to start the season, it could go either way IMO.

    Hurricanes

    Starters:
    Numia
    Devery
    Tosi
    Delany
    Walker-Leawere
    Shields
    Lakai
    Iose
    Roigard
    Hohepa
    Naholo
    Higgins
    Proctor
    Banks
    Godfrey

    Impact:
    Tuputupu
    Rakete-Stones
    Mafileo
    Gallagher??
    Kirifi
    Vijoen
    Harkin
    Umaga-Jensen

    Updated list of players unavailable:

    • Ruben Love (5-6 weeks)
    • Asafo Aumua (2 weeks)
    • Tyrel Lomax (5 weeks)
    • Devan Flanders (season)
    • Brett Cameron (season)
    • Lucas Cashmore (10 weeks)

TBC on timeframe still but his leg is apparently broken so that's at least 3-6 months out of the game and could be longer by the sounds of it as it was described as nasty which isn't a good sign. Feel for Devan, I feel like this was his year to make a stamp on that 6 jersey and push for international honours.

Surely has to be niggles. I guess we’ll see when the Hurricanes Hunters team is named.

If they are in there we may as well kiss the season goodbye.

    @Canes4life

    From Stuff:

Like their round one opponents, the Hurricanes have major injury concerns with centre Billy Proctor the latest high-profile withdrawal. One of four co-captains named this week, Proctor was a late scratching with what was described as a minor leg injury.

Fair enough if it’s niggles. Let’s hope that’s the case with Banks and Higgins. They are way too good not to make this team.

I’m thinking a comfortable win for the Saders here. Canes got too much quality out of the squad. More ABs in red and black should count for something.

And it would, if those ABs had earned their jersey....alas...

    Plus, Penney.

Both teams have decent forward packs.
But the Canes back line is very cobbled together. Could actually be pretty dangerous if they fire, but some inexperience in key positions... As long as Roigard takes control and stays on the field it is going to be very interesting.
