@MN5 nah I've dropped a few kegs, instead of nearing the tonne I'm nearing the mid 80s. Not nearly as athletic as I was 6 months ago. Probably getting shorter too.

Probably still a match for Jesse Kriel.

Not a patch on Reiko Ioane though.

Interesting contrast of styles between the super structured Ireland, who are kind of more than the sum of their parts, and NZ, who never seem to be as good as their talent suggests.

Guys like Aki and Lowe couldn't make the ABs but are key pieces for Ireland. I wonder if the ABs would be better if they were more structured, or would it detract from the natural ability of our players. People in NZ are super critical of guys like Reiko, DMac and Mo'unga... But in a vacuum they are probably the best athletes and/or most talented players in their positions in the world. Why don't we get the best out of them?

Reiko is 105kgs, probably the fastest player in the squad, extreme acceleration. He's a much better athlete than guys like Kriel or Slade, maybe any 13... Dmac has the most speed of any 10, an awesome skillset, maybe the best catch pass of anyone, again a much better athlete than a Pollard or Sexton... Yet neither is anywhere near as productive on the field. Why?

I’d like to see some proof of that. Kriel looks like an extreme crossfitter.

Ioane is 8kgs heavier and 5cm taller than Kriel

    So what ?

Are you seriously trying to suggest Kriel is a better athlete than Ioane?

Well I’m certainly disputing the statement that Ioane is apparently the greatest athlete playing rugby these days. Maybe ever ?

I thought the comment actually was "He's a much better athlete than guys like Kriel or Slade, maybe any 13"

So maybe we could list the biggest, fastest, heaviest, (and most agile?) 13s currently playing the game. I doubt Rieko is the most coordinated. And I gotta say Kriel has become a pretty handy 13 (arguably Am is better at 13, but I'd really like us to have a 12 like De Allende).

And possibly this guy will return to form (at 13?) https://www.aap.com.au/news/wallaby-kerevi-prepares-to-be-best-in-the-world-again/

I don't think Rieko is the best athlete ever but he's clearly faster than Kriel.

This is what the ABs trainer Nic Gill said about Ioane.

"The best athlete we have at the moment is Rieko Ioane. He’s a midfielder, think he weighs about 107 kilos, fastest guy on the team, can do a bronco and a yo-yo as good as anyone else who might be 80 or 90 kilos.

And then in the gym, he is extremely strong, too. He probably is the supreme athlete, if you are talking about size, power, speed, endurance. I am sure he wouldn’t mind me saying it, he doesn’t have much of a step on him, but then we are not talking about that being a form of athleticism. Nah, Rieko is pretty freakish."

    @MN5

I’ve met him at an event here, he’s fucking jacked.

Not super tall (just at or maybe a bit over 6 ft I reckon) but doesn’t look like he has a ml of fat on him.

Vermuelen was also there, and he is just a fucking monster.

Yeah that's one aspect though isn't it?

Kriel won't ever be as fast, tall or heavy. The point is Ioane is top in all the facets.

Speed, strength and endurance. Those are all the measures.

As far as rugby players with skills making decisions at the right time neither Ioane or Kriel are close to Am.

@darylmitchell Bundee and JGP couldn’t make the ABs when the ABs had more depth and their names weren’t in the conversation. Had they stuck around they would have definitely got their shot.

Also possible that the Irish system and structure of the Euro comps helped them along.

All the best to Proctor but can’t help but feel he’s not done himself any favours

Hard disagree, Mike. Whānau comes first. All the best to Billy Proctor and his family for the days ahead.

Why didn't he just make himself unavailable for tour like soon-to-be dad Hunter Paisami already has?

Why should NZ Rugby be paying to jet people back and forth between hemispheres because they want to have a slice of each cake rather than committing to one (prioritize family life or highly-paid All Black commitments).

Proctor should've given up his spot for someone else who would've killed for the opportunity to represent their country instead of attempting to have a bob each way.

Think you may be being a bit unfair. We don't know the full details - babies don't always arrive when people expect and medical complications resulting in premature birth are common, particularly if this is their first child.

His wife and kid come first and NZR are absolutely right to support him.

It does make me laugh how people get so upset about things like this. It is essentially an employment matter with an employer and employee want to do the right thing for the good of both parties.

    Maybe so

But as we’ve seen it’s harder to get out of the ABs than in, his ship may have sailed

I don’t think so. The AB mgmt would have know well in advance about the birth of Proctor jnr in and factored that into their plans.

Generally speaking, pro sports teams like their players to marry and have families as it keeps them settled down and not out tearing it up drinking and chasing women (that’s the theory anyway!) and NZR are good employers in this regard.

Does it mean his ship has sailed? No. Form in super rugby will determine if he gets into the squad next year. Then it is up to him.

He won’t get dropped because he is on paternity leave.

    We've got one coming through

    Max Llewelyn
Son of former Wales lock Gareth Llewelyn

    196cm & 105kg

Sounds like Jordie. And we are talking about 13s here!

    He is a 13
